I've been told to go to a specific IRC channel for some information.
Approaching 80 and on the web since Netscape, I've never used IRC.
All my SeaMonkey installs have used only defaults, never needed add-ons.

My web search indicates that ChatZilla is installed by default.
I don't see it.

I am using SeaMonkey 2.49.4 on Debian 9.13 .
I have later software on a different machine.
But, for now this is what I have available.

What should I be reading?
Decades in customer support taught me that "newbies" often don't realize
how much they don't know. At least I recognize my newbie status in this.

Perhaps you should click on "Window" then click on "IRC Chat"

Richard, down in the bottom left of your SeaMonkey screen, how many
little icons do you see?? 4 or 5??

If 5 icons, if you 'mouse-over' them, one should be for 'IRC Chat' (the
'cZ' icon). If you click on that icon, what happens??

If only 4 icons, that would suggest (at least to me) that when your
SeaMonkey 2.49.4 was install, someone decided *NOT* to install the
Chatzilla portion of SeaMonkey. I'm not sure but this may mean you will
have to re-install SeaMonkey and select to install the Chatzilla portion
of the program. (If having to reinstall SeaMonkey, make sure you back-up
your profile .... you know .... Just in case!! ;-) )

This machine doesn't display "IRC Chat" when clicking on "Window". It is
much more accessible. Is ChatZilla available for SeaMonkey 2.49.4 ?

I can see that happening if ChatZilla is listed separately in a menu drive.

Having just bought a 10-pack of 16 GB flash drives I'll dedicate one to
backups and use another to do a 'quarantined' install of SeaMonkey.
That will:
1. leave my current setup unmolested.
2. allow me to experiment with some profile mods I'm considering.

Richard, Chatzilla certainly WAS an optionally Add-On for SeaMonkey but,
as I explained elsewhere, it is now incorporated into SeaMonkey.

If your SeaMonkey 2.49.4 doesn't include Chatzilla, the Chatzilla home
page is, apparently, at http://chatzilla.hacksrus.com/ You may be able
to get a SM V 2.49.4 suitable version of Chatzilla there.

No, I hadn't.
I entered "chatzilla" in the search box which appeared after clicking on
the link you gave. It was not reported as installed.

I chose to install and allow a restart of SeaMonkey. "IRC Chat" now
appears when clicking on "Window". Its icon also now appears with the
others at the bottom of my screen. ChatZilla apparently launches properly.

I'll re-read the links suggested in this thread.
Three quick questions:
1. Is there a page describing the networks listed as available by
default at the bottom of the ChatZilla screen?
2. Is there a particular network&channel particularly appropriate for
a newbie to get his introduction to proper use of IRC?
3. How do I add a particular network to what is available when
ChatZilla starts?

I had tried that site. When attempting to download/install via the link
on that page I was prevented from installing by a series of warnings.

Dave Yeo's suggestion to go to about:addons got me on the right path.
I now have ChatZilla.

about:addons is also available from the "Tools" menu as "Add-Ons
Manager", which may be easier to remember/find.

There's also about:about, with a handy list of about: links (...but I
always seem to forget about that one when trying to remember exactly

Richard, on the Chatzilla screen, you first need to connect to one or
more IRC servers, e.g. the SeaMonkey IRC is one of the many channels on
the irc.libera.chat server. I'm also connected to the IRC server of my
old ISP.

Your particular IRC group may be on a different IRC server which you
might have to create an account on. Check with your friends/associates.

Once you have the server set up, you would then be able to select which
Channels you want to read/contribute.

out to be interesting for aspects other than providing Pop3 for its
members. The homepage states, in part, "... live help is available on
IRC via irc.sdf.org in the #helpdesk channel."

Is "irc.sdf.org" an IRC server in the sense you had in mind above?
If so, how do I connect?

I was looking for a web page resembling about:about but having a one or
two line description of each.

It also would include those links omitted because they require query
strings.

Last modified in 2015, so it might be missing some newer entries and
some it does list might be obsolete, but I don't suppose the purpose of

In your Browser screen, enter "irc.sdf.org" (without the double quotes)
in the Address Bar ..... Hmm! That takes you to a webpage which asks you
to choose one of four types of Feeds (fediverse??) and I don't know
which to advise you to select, Richard.

Maybe you need to ask someone else ..... perhaps the person who original
told you to "go to a specific IRC channel for some information" (from
your original post!!)

A re-read of http://chatzilla.hacksrus.com/faq/ led me to trying
irc.sdf.org as target of the "/attach" command. It worked ;}
[don't recall what question I was pursuing when first browsing FAQs.]

I'll have to re-read one of the sdf.org tutorials to recall how to use
my SDF id with their IRC channel.

Today's homework is a more complete reading of the FAQs and following
the mini-tutorial at http://chatzilla.hacksrus.com/ . One of the links I
found also has a generic tutorial. I'll check it out also.

Subsequent "/join #helpdesk" got me into the appropriate channel. A
useful exchange with a couple members followed.
