Rather than a blurb at Slashdot, the actual article is at:

https://www.theverge.com/2021/10/4/22709166/microsoft-windows-11-release-download-available

"If you’ve purchased a Windows 10 machine recently, that means you
should be able to upgrade to Windows 11 right now."

Could they be any more vague? What is "recently"? When's the cutoff
duration for when it is not recent? They don't know, so they just
regurgitate what someone else declared.

You go a stretch down the road, and turn left. How many left turns
might there before you drive a stretch down the road?

Go get the MediaCreationTool for Windows 11.

Example. Option 3 promises an ISO. "Download Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO)"
Only a 64-bit version is available.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows11

Why in the name of God would you use uupdump
for your Release copy you'll soon be using
on customer machines ?

there has been plenty of information on what qualifies, so there's no
need for that article to repeat it.

Hi Paul,
Chuckle!
I wrote an updates program that goes out and check
for updates on various programs I support. I was
using uupdump to tell me what new was available.
Sort of like a heads up. I will be downloading the
official ISO in a few minutes.
Thank you for the link. I now have it marked
in my W11 directory.
-T
I just noticed that the ISO name leaves out the
build number.

There's an XML file inside the sources\install.ESD, with the release number.

Name: Windows.iso Windows 11 x64 Oct.5,2021 edition
Size: 4471455744 bytes (4264 MiB)
SHA1: 81B4971245ECEEB04F392F75F9A1FE361194B405

seven editions:

Windows 11 Home
Windows 11 Home N
Windows 11 Home Single Language
Windows 11 Education
Windows 11 Education N
Windows 10 Pro
Windows 10 Pro N

BUILD.SPBUILD = 22000.194

At least I didn't get the eleven version ISO,
which is too big for a single layer DVD. If you
got that one, you could use rufus.ie to prepare
a USB stick (it has a UEFI prep option).

The web page will be sniffing the host OS you use
for the download, so don't be surprised if it behaves
in a squirrel-like manner. For example, if you download
with Linux, the ISO is 5.1GB or so. That's likely to be
the eleven version DVD, four more versions than above.

Whether the SHA1 matches yours, all depends on how the
ISO was prepared. For a straight download, it would likely
be the same as mine. If MediaCreationToolW11 makes it,
there could be some sort of date stamp inside the ISO,
throwing off the SHA1 sum.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows11

Best guess,
Paul

That would indicate that the Insider Preview some of us are already
running is identical to the final release. I imagine that there will be
an update to do little more than change the version number.

Maybe that's Win11 21H2 and there'll also be a Win10 21H2 update? That won't be
confusing.

Maybe MS saw I was on 21H1 and gave me 21H2

The bootable media created by Media Creation Tool can apparently only be
used to do a clean installation, not an upgrade, so that rules it out
for me.

Is there a Setup.exe on that boot media ?

And besides, your new build has a DVD drive.
Surely a DVD would work for you and do both
Clean installs as well as Repair/Upgrade installs.

In my W10 VM here, I was already seeing pestering to upgrade.

It looks like the USB stick is perfectly

I just had a crazy thing happen. The Win 11 I got from MS turned out
to be 20H2 on one machine. I used the same flash drive on an Acer
laptop and winver showed 21H1. Will test again tomorrow.
My Panasonic portable phone died Sunday ordered a new one AT&T
and one back cover doesn't fit. That is two things, now waiting for #3

Cut my first flash drive with it. It would not boot in
qemu-kvm, but it did boot natively.
I have a wipe and reinstall on a laptop tomorrow. I
will try W11 first.

"Regional variations

N/KN

As with previous versions of Windows since Windows XP, all Windows 10 editions
for PC hardware have "N" and "KN" variations in Europe and South Korea that
exclude certain bundled multimedia functionality, including media players
and related components, in order to comply with antitrust rulings.

The "Media Feature Pack" can be installed to restore these features.[46]

The variation cannot be changed without a clean install, and keys for one
variation will not work on other variations.
"

Part of that might at one time, have included a browser selection
process. Seeing as the browser choice was part of litigation.
