Hi all,

We have a laptop (W10 64b Pro) where the wifi is logged in on our own
private network. It all worked well. But now the network center says all
of a sudden it's an unknown and public network, so file sharing,
connecting to shares in the network and remote access have become
impossible.
I logged off and on again, but it still says an unknown and public network.
How can I change this back to a local and private network?

X---broadband modem ------------------ one computer @ 1.2.3.4 [This is public]

X---broadband modem --- NAT Router --- one or more computers @ 192.168.1.2 , 192.168.1.3

To me, one of the detections for public/private, is whether the
address is route-able or not. The 192.168.1.2 is not route able and is
a part of NAT (Network Address Translation). That's for IPV4 addresses.

"RFC 1918 allocates the following for private address space:

10.0.0.0/8
172.16.0.0/12
192.168.0.0/16 [ = 192.168.x.x ]
"

IPV6 is a different animal, in terms of whether NAT is used
or is popular. You might well need a web page with the
secret decoder ring, to figure out what the number means.

To gather information about the addresses the computer
uses, you can try "ipconfig".

Settings > Network & Internet > Status < Click "Properties" on adapter
Network Profile > Public => Private

Hi Paul,

All systems in our network - the laptop as well - get their fixed IP
address from the DHCP server, based on their MAC addresses.

That reminds me of a time when I casually mentioned to a coworker that you
can use a routable IP scheme behind a NAT router. You don't have to use
RFC1918 addresses. I thought his head was going to explode but he
eventually got it. :-)

But that address has to come from somewhere, and for the home users
here, Internet addresses aren't just lying around on the floor
next to the computer :-)

Whereas there is a high probability of using a 192.168.x.x address
on IPV4, in a home situation. Although I think there was at least
one individual who was connected to teh Internet here, with just
a broadband modem and one computer (no router). That could happen
in the old days, because the first ADSL boxen were modem-only ones.

I've never taken that much interest in the public versus private,
as once set, it seemed to behave itself. I don't think I've ever
been in a wrestling match with it. But bugs are always just
around the corner on modern software, just as a hole could
open in the floor next to my computer desk and I could fall
in.

Since the scenario here is that you're behind a NAT router, you can use any
IP address subnet, routable or not, already in use on the Internet or not.
The NAT function guarantees there will be no address collisions with regard
to the greater Internet. The downside comes when you want to access an
Internet site that has an address that falls within your funky LAN scope.
You won't be able to get there because your PC will take a look at the
destination I and say, "hey, that's local, let's ARP for the MAC". Other
than that, it works fine.

In my travels, I mostly see LANs that use the 192.168/16 range, and a much
smaller number that use the 10/8 range. I rarely see anyone using the
172.16/16 range. They'd all work equally well on a home LAN, but most home
routers come preconfigured to use 192.168.x.x and people seem to just leave
it there.

Shared folders seem to be the big complaint when a home network gets
changed to Public.

Well, if it works and they don't notice, good.

If it doesn't work, they can change it back manually.

I usually set the laptops of people I maintain to public. They are going
to move around from home to workplace or school, with networks that
could be in fact hostile, so better be safe, no reason for them to open
to sharing files with the outside places.

If this is WiFi not Ethernet then [In MS fashion] the setting is
accessed in a different place:

Down in the taskbar tray click Network icon locate connected WiFi
connection and click Properties. Right near top is is Network profile
and Public|Private option

It is Wifi indeed. I first checked the channel 5 Wifi properties. The
laptop was logged in this one. But in de proerties I did not see the
Public/Privat option.
Then I logged in to the 2.4 channel, and there in the properties I found
the Public/Privat option. So I was able to set it to Privat.

But I already got it solved. In the Wifi properties there was
Public/Privat option. I was able to set it to Privat.
