A long time ago I used context. There was a possibility to say this
belongs together. When it would not fit on the same page a page break
was added.
Does latex has something like that?

Put it all in a \vbox but be prepared for lots of error messages.

The easiest way to my mind would be a parbox or minipage. Most other
boxes should work too. There is also package needspace, which does
something similar.

I am going to study it.

It is 'a lot of work' to start working with latex, but I am sure it is
worth the investment. :-D

It would be very useful to those of us who try to write documentation if
you had the time to note down which bits were more work than you
expected, or didn't work the way you thought.

Seems you mean:

- If all the material fits on the page currently constructed by TeX, put
it on that page.
- If all the material does not fit on the page currently constructed by
TeX but fits on the next page, do a page break and put it on the next
page.

There are still some questions:

How to handle page breaking in case there is more material than fits on
a single page?

This case cannot be handled by putting all the material into a single
box.

How to handle footnotes? Not every box, e.g., minipage-environment, is
suitable for having footnotes.

How to handle multicolumn-text?

------------------------------------------------------------------------

With the text within a samepage-environment TeX prefers page breaks
between paragraphs to page breaks within a paragraph.

Ulrich

Also, what do you do with the page left part-empty by moving the
material to a new page? Fill with white-space, or space out the material
left behind to fill out the page?
