I posted this to the Archive magazine mailing list thread "Printng" but
it, along with a couple of other posts, hasn't appeared there. The
discussion is about printing to a networked printer...

"I have just downloaded and installed RemotePrinterFS and it works
remarkably well. I use the MW PS3 driver and most of my work prints on my
Lexmark duplex colour laser printer without any problems. Interestingly I
get identical results with
RemotePrinterFS#proto=LPD;host=ET0021B725BF8C;buffer=yes:
and
RemotePrinterFS#proto=JetDirect;host=ET0021B725BF8C;buffer=yes:
as the printer path. [1]

There is however one problem; although I am able to print from Draw,
Paint, Photodesk Pluto and Easiwriter, I have no success printing from
Ovation Pro. There is a brief click fom the printer and the light
indicating that data is being transferred flashes and then ... nothing.
I'd be intrigued to know if anyone else has seen this and more important,
found a way to circumvent the problem.
B

[1] ET0021B725BF8C is how the printer is seen on the network."

Your post just arrived at the Archive mailing list. Apparently there's some
delay between posting and arriving. My answer is posted and will surely
arrive in due time.

Yes, I'm afraid that is a real problem with AOL and why, though I read it,
I never bother to post much because getting answers takes too long.

The problem, of course, is the fact that all posts first have to go
through the moderator and that introduces a delay. Why it needs to be
moderated I cannot fathom and it is high time it ceased to be. Livtech is
un-moderated and it works well. Indeed, as far as I am aware, non of the
other mailing lists I subscribe to are moderated and they work just fine.

I have two printers connected to my router network using RemotePrinterFS
but use .....

RemotePrinterFS#proto=JetDirect;host=10.0.0.12;port=9600:

and

RemotePrinterFS#proto=JetDirect;host=10.0.0.13;port=9600:

Printing to them from Ovation Pro 2.78 works flawlessly.
Could it be that using the printers MAC address rather than its network
address is the problem?

Well...

Running VRPC-DL and Printers 1.91a I have three printer drivers setup and
they all work okay from RISC OS over the LAN to the respective printers.

RemotePrinterFS and JetDirect.

On Menu bar icon of the printers, Shift adjust click brings forth the
Connections config window.

JetDirect is ticked On and the "Printer" writable has the network address
of the particular printer in it, 192.168.0.9 for one example.

Anything on RISC OS that can print, does print, including Ovation Pro
(2.78e) without difficulty.

Is there an option in Ovation to just print ASCII text as would be used for
a daisywheel printer?

Printing from edit uses that certainly for PCL(and PostScript?) printers

n.b. I think !Prophet's option of 'Direct Printing' is plain text

I have this morning discovered that OPro 2.78e prints via the PoScript2
driver and that the issues I have been describing are only apparent when
I use MW Software's PostScript3 driver. A further complication is that I
use Richard Darby's modifications to enable duplex printing. More
investigation later to see if I can identify exactly where the problem is.
This is very frustrating as I am able to get full colour double sided
output when printing from Easiwriter and Impression neither of which I
use regularly any more.

Weird - in that I have this problem too - but only with
EasiWriter.. never had a use for Ovation.

I do not use EW much these days either - but I seem to
recall that the last time I printed from EW using the PS3
driver, it worked, though it was just a very brief covering
ltter.

I updated my copy of OPro to 2.78e and successfully printed in duplex and
in colour using MW PostScript 3 driver and my Duplex printer definition
file on my Brother Printer.

One of the differences between the PS2 and PS3 printer definition files is
the PS2 definition contains 35 translations between RISC OS fonts and
PostScript font names. Whereas, the PS3 printer definition files do not
contain these and rely on the fonts being embedded in the PostScript.

Could this be an indicator of a font problem with OPro? - Just grabbing at
straws!!

Have you considered a complete re-installation of OPro as your copy may be
corrupt in some way.

Found it!

It took a long time to discover I had changed the A4(Generic PS) paper
size definition. I copied my settings from Printers on my VA where it has
worked for years with margins set at 5mm all round printing via UniPrint
to the same printer.
I have now changed the margins to 8.1mm top and bottom and 6.3mm left and
right which I believe is the default and everything now seems to be well.

Thanks to everyone who has commented it is appreciated.
