Only for these two cases:

  (A)  The graphic (jpg) appears underneath all of the text in the
       email;

or,

  (B)  The graphic (jpg) is put on a web server, and the recipient's
email program must download the graphic (jpg) from the web
       server to display it.

Case (B) also requires an external HTML editor to create the
message body (unless you are skilled at writing raw HTML).

Note for case (B) that many email programs will _not_ automatically
download remote HTML images, except possibly from verified contacts
in its address book. This is to prevent spammers from verifying that
spam to the recipient's address was received and opened. If you want
a little more explanation, see this page in the Agent help file:

if you reply to a message or with a new email you get in the File -
Edit line a new field named Insert. Click on it and click on File

Surely that adds it as an attachment, I want to embed in the email.

When I do Reveal Source in Thunderbird, I see that every
attachment is part of the email source - embedded, if you will,
is how it is "added as an attachment."

For reading groups in Forte, the .jpg attachments always require
launching FastStone, by clicking on them.

I was surprised when TB (as my new reader, I think) first displayed
a picture for me, years ago, for an attachment. That seems to be
an option for the newsreader. Optional or fixed behavior? I don't
know.

I know thattext-attachments that aren't displayed. I don't remember
(for TB) whether picture-attachments are sometimes NOT displayed.

Attach the jpg and then, on the attachments dialog, change 'Placement'
to "Inline MIME Section".

    screen-shot: <http://img4.imagetitan.com/img.php?image=27_fvegni_1__change-placement-to-inline-mime-section.png>

The option "Inline MIME Section" is only available when the message's
'Attachments Format' is set to "MIME". That should be the default for
email messages. If the option "Inline MIME Section" is not available,
first change the message's 'Attachments Format' to "MIME".

    screen-shot: <http://img4.imagetitan.com/img.php?image=27_fvegni_2__attachment-format-must-be-mime-for-this.png>

The next bit could be stating the obvious. You might need to resize
the jpg *before* attaching it, so that the jpg will not be not too big
for the email page. Agent does not do this for you.

The compose window will not show the embedded graphic (jpg) in the
compose window body pane. But you can save the message as draft and
see it with the graphic in the 'Drafts' folder in Agent 4.0 and later.

There is a clear difference between an attachment, which appears as an
icon at the bottom of the email with choices like "launch", and images
that are embedded in an HTML email in full as part of the message.

I have no doubt that a more thorough examination of the email source
will show a difference in how each is put into the message.

In the code yes but in the result maybe not. Eudora has an option,
Display attached images inline, and I checked that box 30 years ago and
I can't tell how the image got into my email.

Eudora is more than 30 years old and hasn't been updated since 2006, but
we are still a happy couple.

Congratulation on your Pearl Anniversary.

And I can empathise -- I tend to keep stuff that works (hardware or
software) until it stops working.

I would probably still be using PC Write were it not for the hassle of
printing from a DOS session under Windows. And my seduction by
OpenOffice.
