Hi Dave,
I have been writing books for 16 years now, I use texstudio to write and
Jabref for the references. In the (la)tex-code I have citations like
\citep and \citet which come with biblatex. The combination of jabref
and texstudio enables me to see the references in real time in popups
when hovering with mouse over the written citep. If you need more
information please pass me a private mail.

1. Use a reference manager like JabRef to maintain your list of
references. Each one must have a unique key name to reference it by (in
JabRef they call this column the 'bibtexkey'.

2. Save it to a .bib file to use with LaTeX (eg myrefs.bib)

3. In your LaTeX document,
add between the \documentclass line and the \begin{document} line:

\usepackage[backend=biber,style=authoryear]{biblatex}
\addbibresource{myrefs.bib}

4. In your text you can use \cite{key} or \parencite{key} to make a
citation (there are other commands too, read the biblatex documentation).

5. At the end of your document, before \end{document} add the line

\printbibliography

See http://latex.silmaril.ie/formattinginformation/xrefs.html#bib
for more details.
