I am running Windows 11 22H2, current, on an HP desktop. My
Internet provider Is Spectrum (Charter). Agent is version 8.

Several days ago, without me changing anything, email
won't leave my computer.

The error message box says:

An error has occurred in an online task.

ERROR: Server Charter refused to accept email from your computer
(5.1.0 <khbubul@charter.net> sender rejected.)

Task: Send mail message Test6

Server: Charter (smtp.charter.net)

Time: 7/13/2023 1:17:43 PM

Status: Failed

=======

What is my problem and how do I fix it? Incoming email works
fine, as does gmail and outlook sending and receiving.

Inbound email uses pop.charter.net successfully.

Outbound email uses smtp.charter.net unsuccessfully now.

Because I am a green hand at this stuff, I tried the
suggestion of trying imap.charter.net. That didn't
pass the connection test.

Spectrum support held its nose and said they don't
fool with "third-party apps."

Thanks in advance for any help.

Unfortunately, Google only shows an IMAP configuration for
@charter.net, and the servers are mobile.charter.net

https://www.spectrum.net/support/internet/spectrum-basic-email-troubleshooting

This page does mention SMTP:

https://www.postbox-inc.com/setup/email-settings/access-charter-net-via-imap-smtp

Unless my memory has failed, Agent does not do IMAP.

Looking at these one by one...

> ERROR: Server Charter refused to accept email from your computer
> (5.1.0 <khbubul@charter.net> sender rejected.)

Some email providers won't let you send email with another 'From:'
address which is not with them. The error message itself looks
like that kind of error.

Even if an email provider did not do this previously, it may have
changed its policy (say to control outgoing spam).

But the sender address in the error message does appear to be a
Charter email address. So I have a few more questions.

1. Is that your real Charter email address?

2. Is Agent configured to log in to smtp.charter.net for sending
email? That is, on the outbound email server settings panel, is
Agent configured so it will log in with a username and password?

3. Do you have two different Charter email accounts? And if so,
is Agent logging in with the *same* account that the 'From:'
address is using?

I am wondering whether you need to have Agent log in with the
same email address that you have in the 'From:' address.

The error message is from the Charter server, not from Agent.
Overall, this looks like a problem where Charter has to explain
what the error message means.

> Because I am a green hand at this stuff, I tried the

Just FYI, IMAP is not for sending email. IMAP is another way of
receiving email. And Agent does not do IMAP.

Help desks have performance targets to close over ~ 80% of support
calls on the first call. Anything they can say to close the support
call gets them closer to their target, including fobbing you off with
excuses. If the help desk manager gets a bonus for reaching target,
then they are happy.

I got this error when my server changed their security settings.
I had to change in tools -- server and accounts -- outbound email
services -- (server name ) -- advanced settings the port number.
And check if the box has a 'v' in use a non-standard smtp port

khbubul@charter.net has been and is my real charter email

Under Accounts and Servers I have 2 Outbound email servers:
charter and smtp.charter.net. Neither requires a login method or
password.

Since my password is 'way over 10 years old, I'm not sure I even
know what it is anymore.

Spectrum help says authentication should be turned ON, and login
with "your full Spectrum-provided email address" and "your Spectrum-
provided email password".

In Agent 8, this means:

* 'Login Method' should be set to "Username and password",
* 'Username' should be your full Spectrum-provided email address,
* 'Password' should be your Spectrum-provided email password.

If you cannot send email, this may mean Spectrum now does require
a login method and password.

Go read this:

Changing Your Email Password or Resetting a Forgotten Email Password

Tell us if your other Agent outbound email server settings
were the same as what Spectrum help says.

a. "SSL: On"
b. "Port: 587"

In Agent 8, these mean

* 'Connection' should be "Connect securely on standard mail
submission port"
* Then when you click 'Advanced Settings', the 'Port' should be
automatically set to 587 and greyed out. (If necessary,
remove any check-mark from 'Use a non-standard SMTP port'
and try again.)
