I've been using Agent for a long, long time.
My agent is configured as follows:
- Programmed in:
e:\Com\Net\Agent\
- Data and agent.ini file in
f:\Agent_Data\
The shortcut to launch Agent contains in Target:
E:\Com\Net\Agent\agent.exe -home:NewsUrlIniFile

I don't understand, or rather I've forgotten, how the relationship
between -home:NewsUrlIniFile and the f:\Agent_Data\ folder is made.

All this, because I'm obliged to set up a new PC, as the current one is
becoming obsolete and a little unstable, and so I have to transfer all
my current applications to the new PC, of course with exactly the same
installation paths.

So I need to refresh my memory!

It would be easier and better to use this in the shortcut's Target

E:\Com\Net\Agent\agent.exe f:\Agent_Data\

If you still want to know how the relationship between -home:NewsUrlIniFile
and the f:\Agent_Data\ folder is made...

1. The relationship is made by Agent in the Windows registry.

2. The relationship is made to allow launching news: URLs such as
"news:qpon9i1pvqcjf5ikocfjumustm3i0llvo1@4ax.com" via a registry
association. It was not intended for shortcut targets.

3. To have Agent to make the relationship, you first have to launch
Agent with the correct data folder but with the relationship not
yet made. You launch Agent from a shortcut with a target like
this:
E:\Com\Net\Agent\agent.exe f:\Agent_Data\

4. If Agent thinks it may be used for launching news: URLs,
Agent will then set the relationship in the registry.

In my view, you would be better sticking with a shortcut target of
E:\Com\Net\Agent\agent.exe f:\Agent_Data\
rather than starting with this (step 3) and then changing it to
-home:NewsUrlIniFileafter Agent had made the relationship.

Second bullet point:

* When you launch Agent from a shortcut you will have specified
an argument in the Target section of the shortcut which
specifies the location of the data folder.

B. Help >> Index >> Multiple copies
Point 3

3. [...] Once you have created the new shortcut, select it,
right-click and choose Properties from the menu. On the
Properties dialog box, edit the Target field so that it
contains the following text:

path-to-agent.exe path-to-data-folder

[...] For example:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Agent\agent.exe" "C:\Users\your name\My Documents\agent2

I like my moldy oldie v1.91. I can just copy the directory off on a
thumb drive and run it anywhere.

I have run Agent versions 5.00 though 8.00 off a thumb drive.

On a thumb drive, it is a bit slower retrieving headers and bodies.

That still works with my 6.0, updated consecutively from 0.99, never a
new install. This was written on a Chromebook with Agent running in
Linux/WINE.

When I move agent on a new computer, I run the installer, so windows
has the proper registry settings, then I copy the old data folder. My
current shortcut says:
Target: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Agent\agent.exe"
Start in: "C:\Forte\Agentbooks"

If I run that shortcut, I have agent configured in folder, default
properties, receiving messages, attachment folder,
full path to folder: p:\books\

That gives control over placements of program location, agent's
internal data, and my download data.

By having multiple subfolders in C:\Forte, each with a shortcut, I
can have multiple instances of Agent [running simultaneously if I
want] using different servers or newsgroups or different 'test things
out' settings.

I realise there are multiple ways of configuring Agent. The above
works for me.
