Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge include options to improve the basic
spellchecking functionality of the web browser.

Chrome's Enhanced Spellcheck and Microsoft Edge's Microsoft Editor are
designed to improve spellchecking further, but they do by transferring
pretty much anything that users type into fields to company servers.

Well, it only makes sense to do it that way. You want to leverage the
power of the cloud! After all, there's no way you could get that sort
of spellchecking power on a PC, right?

That "cloud" crap is nothing but some servers in some backroom
somewhere, just like it always was. The nomenclature "Cloud" is a
bunch of new nonsense to get more dollars (info) from the ignorant.

You are talking about "functionality of the web browser".

What 'spellchecking functionality' do browsers employ?? Don't browsers
just do their best to display what the web-page programmer wanted us to
see??

Or am I missing something??

Webmail. Social media. Credit card numbers. People can
do a lot of typing in a browser. The article should also note
that allowing suggestions in the address bar also sends a lot
of data. The sensible option is to put the addresses of these
"services" in your HOSTS file. Microsoft, Mozilla, Google, etc.

The artice does present an interesting point, though. It hadn't
occurred to me. I've never used spellcheck, but I would have
assumed it was based on an onboard database.

It's not easy to even imagine a lot of this sleaze. Committees
sit around thinking it up. Remember when Google Maps vans
were caught slurping any unlocked wifi data they could get,
saving it on hard disks in the vans? They denied it. But then,
somehow, the man who wrote the software was ID'ed. Who
would imagine that a van driving by might spy on you? But
Google did (does?) and they apparently found it profitable.
So you have to assume they're trying to collect everything possible.
The power of datamining is not so much in specific data as it is
in vast data that can be analyzed.

Well, it sort of notes that, but granted, not very clearly.

FWIW, in Chrome, the 'Enhanced spell check' is off by default and the
description of what it is and does is (IMO) very clear. (See the
screenshot in the article.) But we can't expect Google users to actually
*read*, can we!?

BTW, the ghacks.net page is literally *splattered* with ads and
auto-plays a video. Hypocritical much!? :-)
