I've Used MSOffice 2002 for ages (Word and Excel mostly). Is 2002 the
last stand alone MS version which does not need any internet connection
or is thaere a later version that also does the same?
With 2002 the only time it needs any sort of verification because of
when something changes (crash etc.) all it needs is the disk insertion
to verify, but it is getting long in the tooth and only x32 I think.
My sister has Office365 on Windows 7 and it is always having
authentication/ verification problems which are a real PITA as she cant
use anything offline.. hence contemplating an older version.. and linux
based suites have their own problems. thanks C+

Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64
Office 2007

I have no problems with Office 2007, which does not use the Internet.

I avoid any software that requires the cloud. Thus, I am still using
Acrobat Reader 11.0.23.22.

I have Office 2010 and it runs just fine without an Internet
connection. (Obviously Outlook would be an exception, if you wanted
to use it. I never installed Outlook, because I had to use it at work
and loathed it.) If you decide to buy it, be very careful of your
source because there are a lot of scammers out there who'll sell you
a stolen activation code.

I believe Office 2019 doesn't require an Internet connection, but I
don't have direct experience with it. (Office 2019 is a one-time
purchase, as opposed to the subscription model of Office 365. The
latter _does_ require an Internet connection, I believe.)

But if 2002 does what you need, why would you want to make a change?
There's a significant learning curve for any Office 2007 or later,
because the menus were replaced with the "ribbon". A lot of people
hated it; I didn't, but it took some getting used to.

I use Office 2007(32) which does not need an internet connection. It
tries to use the net when you ask for help. The help sysem was
on-line, not on your computer, but MS took it down many years ago.

Libre Office resides entirely on your machine (you have the option of
downloading the help system). It works somewhat differently from MS
Office. It will "phone home" to check for updates, but nothing else.

You can change that.

Press F1 to open help. Look at the lower right, in the status bar,
and it will tell you whether help is online or offline. Click that
indicator, and select your desired help source. Your selection will
apply to all Office applications, not just the one you have open.

(I have Office 2010, but most things are the same between that and
2007.)

Thanks to all of you who replied, funnily enough I ran a copy of Libre
Office yesterday to see if it might be acceptable, it can run on ribbon
type menues (she probably used those) by changing options. Thanks for
the info on 2007 and 2010 those sound possible as well I didnt know 2007
on also did the ribbon. I will give those a go as well and see if they
might do the trick.
2019 yes I gather that is the last Office with single purchase option
but they are phasing out of single purchase completely and Im sure it
needs authentication all the time or at least every n days. Anyway
thanks for helpful posts everyone. C+

Don't say "I'm sure" when what you really mean is "I suspect". Unless
you have some evidence to support your conjecture, it remains just
that -- a conjecture.

In today's climate, it is really important not to claim something to
be truth unless we have actual _evidence_ than it is. Otherwise we
are just behaving like the Maganuts.

Afaik, all except 365 have stand alone versions. No internet needed
except for initial install on the newer versions and periodic security
downloads. 365 is a subscription service and (mostly) needs the web to
run although it can do a few minor things without the web.
Also, afaik, there is no Office 2002. Did you mean 2003?

My personal Win7 work laptop has parts of Office 2003, 2007, 2013, 2016,
etc, installed and they work ok together but took hours of registry
finesse to do it. I just returned the new W10 laptop with 365 back to
the company and told them they can keep it. Office can't be used
without the web and often where I work there is no web.

Office XP, the precursor to Office 2003, is sometimes informally
referred to as Office 2002. Maybe he meant that one.

Yes. It's also like those people who say "I have this problem. I've
tried everything, but it didn't get fixed. What should I do?"

If you've tried *everything* and it didn't get fixed, there's clearly
no solution.

Yes, very likely. But let me add a comment that, especially when
asking for help, it's very important to use the correct names for
things. Use the wrong name or even an informal name, and you run the
risk of getting a wrong answer.

I usually stuck with Sumatra PDF. It's arguably less feature-rich, but
it makes up for with speed. It loads almost instantly, and since I
mostly use it for reading files - not creating, not OCR, not filling
out forms, none of that - being able to open files fast is the most
important thing

(even in this age of fast solid-state drives and multi-gigahertz CPUs,
there's still a noticable difference).

Although - when I do need those extra features - FoxIt is usually my
fall-back.
