My settings seem correct? Yet a PDF attached to an email opens in
IrfanView.

Executing the string in the Application box (in Run) correctly opens
PDF-XChange Editor.

And if I save the attachment to a local folder and double click it, it
opens in PDF-XChange Editor.

BTW, the Browse button doesn't work, so my attempt to delete and
re-enter failed.

Version 4.2/32 1118

Your problem is caused by this combination:

1) You have IrfanView set as the application for MIME type
application/octet-stream'
2) It seems the sender has sent the PDF with a MIME type of
application/octet-stream.

Generally you should not have an application set for MIME type
application/octet-stream. MIME type application/octet-stream is a
generic MIME type for when the sender does not have or know the
actual MIME type. When you have an application set for MIME type
application/octet-stream, that application may be used for other
attached files which you did not expect it to be used with.

Can you provide the information below...

1. Select the message with this PDF attachment.
2. Now go to "Message >> Index"
3. In the "Items" box, look for the row which represents this PDF
file attachment.
4. Select the row which represents this PDF file attachment.
5. Underneath the "Items" box, look at the following values
for the PDF file attachment:
(a) Type
(b) Disposition
(c) Encoding

What are the values for 'Type', 'Disposition', and 'Encoding'
for this PDF attachment?

(c) Encoding ?

Whether the attachment's MIME type is controlled by you or by the
sender depends on the Encoding.

Sorry, missed that, it's base 64.

That confirms it is the sender or their program which set the MIME
type to "application/octet-stream" for that PDF attachment.

FWIW...

* If the encoding is base64 (or anything except 'UUencoded' and
'yEnc') then the attachment's MIME type is set by the sender or
their program.

* If the encoding is 'UUencoded' or 'yEnc' then the attachment's
MIME type is set by your settings -- that is, your settings at the
time the email or the Usenet message body was received. Adjusting
your settings would only fix it for new messages, not messages
which you have already received.
