How/if can I do this?

I went and got new post from this group

Say the subject was called Mary

I read it then went and got more post which then DELETED subject "MARY"

How /if can I get agent to get that post again?

Hope I have explained my self to what I want

If it isn't too old (depends on your Purge settings) <right-click> the
newsgroup, select "Mark folder unread". It will then show all messages
still in the cache.

View/Custom Message View/Manage Views will let you configure the
conditions under which a message shows up in the list pane. Normally (I
believe), messages that have been read will, on the next pass, not show in
the list.

<right-click> the newsgroup, Default Properties (applies to entire
"desk" I believe) and check the What to Purge and When to Purge
configurations (I'm was set to purge at 30 days; just upped it to 90).
Folder Properties (applies to the selected newsgroup) allows overriding the
default settings for specific groups.

How old was the post and how difficult was it to
get it in the first place?

If that was not hard, you *could* do this, though
it is not the smartest thing to do.

Right click on the group
and then choose "Sample Recent Headers". Choose
a nice big number like 500,000 and then ... sit and
wait till the messages are retrieved from the
server. If it is not a high volume group and MARY
is not too old, she will be back again. Actually, if
you have the patience you can do this again
and again and get older and older posts.

Now, lock all the posts you want to keep before
you do anything. Otherwise, as the other poster
said, you run the risk of MARY being purged.

What to do depends on whether that missing new post has been hidden by
some thing or other, or whether the missing new post is actually
deleted.

I presume the missing new post is a recent post, not a post from
months or years ago.

A. If the missing new post is actually deleted, not hidden:

A.1 Select the group
A.2 Use "Action >> Get Headers >> Sample Recent Headers",
A.3 Choose the option "Retrieve the most recent messages, up to the specified number"
A.4 Enter a number of headers to get. E.g. if the missing new post was in the
most recent 10 posts, enter 10.
A.5 Put a check-mark in "Update record of headers that have been retrieved"
A.6 Click "OK"

Agent will download as many recent headers as you entered in A.4
above.

If the missing new post does not show up after this, try a larger
number in A.4. If that still does not work, next try 'B' below.

B. If the missing new post is hidden, either by the hash collision
problem, or by the current view:

B.1 Select the group
B.2 Set the sort order to turn OFF threading and to show the
most recent posts at the top.
"View >> Sort Messages By >> Date >> Newest message First"
B.3 Set the view to all messages
"View >> All Messages"


Turning off threading (B.2) will un-hide posts hidden by the hash
collision problem.
Setting the view to all messages (B.3) will un-hide posts hidden
by the current view.
Doing both B.2 and B.3 together will un-hide posts which can be
hidden by either one or both of these.

I did the above and set it to 10 it got the ten but not what I wanted

So I put 20 BUT it just keeps sitting there then times out

Yes, you can. Please do so. Besides its being spam, there are two
other reasons:

1. It's not an e-mail message.

2. Nobody on a newsgroup wants to know that (and most people receiving
an e-mail message also don't).

It just clutters up your message and makes it slightly longer
needlessly.

Although you can turn it off, AVG's appending it to a message as the
default is one of the reasons I would never choose to use AVG. AVG has
turned *me* off.

This is not normal. There is something messing with Agent's Internet
connection. Maybe your AntiVirus, maybe your firewall, maybe your
data cap, maybe something else.

The Task Log window might or might not give a clue where it is hanging,
provided:
* You first need to make the AGENT.INI change to VerboseLog
which I described in a previous message.
* You must open the Task Log window BEFORE you try with 10 or 20.

You might want to check your settings for when and what gets
purged.

To get back a now deleted post, you may have to manually get the
header(s).
Action --> Get Headers --> Sample Headers
(or Get All Headers. Can be time consuming depending on
retention, detention, declension, and the phase of the moon...)

Good points - and just because only two people have spoken up on this
point doesn't mean they're the only ones annoyed
