Hi

Forta Agent vi 8

I had my pdf files all set to open with my default pdf reader all worked fine BUT for some reason

I used to click the attachment and it opened with my default program for pdf files

all I get now on the attached file at the bottom is

1326470701.pdf
103.8 kbytes

Instead of

a icon showing the program that opens it with a name

1.....I have re installed pdf program no difference

2.....Gone to tools/options/mime types/application/octet-stream set pdf

3.....Gone to tools/options/mime types/application/octet-stream set pdf then set extension to pdf
4.....Gone to tools/options/mime types/application/octet-stream set pdf then set extension to pdf
then set application to the default folder for the program that opens the pdf files

6......closed agent BUT still get that at bottom of the message

7......made certain that my pdf program is the default in windows 10

I'm stuck to why this is not seeing my default pdf program

Regards

Dumb Blond

The MIME type for PDF is not application/octet-stream but
application/pdf. If this is not in your list, you can add it with the
"Add" button.

In the small dialog pop-up to add to your list, as well as entering
*application*, *pdf* as sub-type... and aftder going OK, did you also
enter the extension *pdf* in the bottom left, then click Apply and OK?

v8.00 picked up my default Win 11 app, Foxit, without my having to
specify it.

Er, your original post has no such mention of SumatraPDF.

Quote: "2.....Gone to tools/options/mime
types/application/octet-stream set pdf."

As Manfred pointed out, it's the *octet-stream* which appears to be
your problem. You don't want to to add *pdf* to *octet-stream*

Go Tools > Options > click *Add* > (in the two line dialog box) 1.
type *application* 2. subtype *pdf*

Down in the bottom left etc. enter pdf... apply... OK

0.1 Select the message with this PDF file having this problem.
0.2 Now go to "Message >> Index"
0.3 In the "Items" box, look for the row which represents this PDF
file attachment.
0.4 Select the row which represents this PDF file attachment.
0.5 Underneath the "Items" box, look at the following values
for the PDF file attachment:
(a) Type
(b) Disposition
(c) Encoding

What are the values for 'Type', 'Disposition', and 'Encoding'
for this PDF attachment?

If the 'Type' is not "application/octet-stream", then messing with "application/octet-stream"
is definitely not going to help.

> 3.....Gone to tools/options/mime types/application/octet-stream set pdf then set extension to pdf

3.1 Setting an extension in "application/octet-stream" is generally not a good idea.
MIME type "application/octet-stream" is a generic MIME type for many different
types of binary files. Setting the extension to pdf can screw up handling other
files which are not pdf.

> 4.....Gone to tools/options/mime types/application/octet-stream set pdf then set extension to pdf
> then set application to the default folder for the program that opens the pdf files

4.1 Setting an application in "application/octet-stream" is generally not a good idea.
MIME type "application/octet-stream" is a generic MIME type for many different
types of binary files. Setting the application to a program that opens PDF files
can screw up opening other files which are not pdf.

4.2 If the program which opens PDF files is this:

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat DC\Reader\AcroRd32.exe

and you want to set the 'Application' field, then the 'Application' field
should be set to this (with all four quote marks):

"C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat DC\Reader\AcroRd32.exe" "%1"

Hi Ralph,

this what I have
0.4 Select the row which represents this PDF file attachment.
0.5 Underneath the "Items" box, look at the following values
for the PDF file attachment:
(a) Type is "application/octet-stream"
(b) Disposition is "attachment:1234566.pdf"
(c) Encoding is "base64"

application/octet-stream nothing in the box's at all now, just "application/octet-stream"

The path to "SumatraPDF"

C:\Users\blonde\AppData\Local\SumatraPDF\SumatraPDF.exe

>set the 'Application' field,

What and where is the above?

When you go to tools >> options >> mime types >> application/octet-stream
there is both an 'Extensions:' box and an 'Application:' box. Is that
what you meant by "set extension to pdf" and "set application to..." ?

Q.1 When you wrote "instead of an icon showing...", Which do you mean?
i) You don't get any icon at all.
ii) You get the Agent icon instead of the icon of the program
that opens PDF files.
iii) You get the icon associated with PDF files instead of the
icon of the program that opens PDF files.
* For example, maybe you get this icon:
<https://cdn.icon-icons.com/icons2/655/PNG/512/pdf_icon_icon-icons.com_59963.png>
instead of this icon:
<https://cdn3.iconfinder.com/data/icons/sumatrapdf-file-icons-1/365/Sumatra-1024.png>
iv) You get some other icon which is neither the Agent icon,
nor the icon of the program that opens PDF files, nor the
PDF file icon.

Q.2 I don't know what you mean by "instead of ... with a name".
(a) You have the name of the attached file at the bottom.
Your post shows it as "1326470701.pdf".
(b) The attached file at the bottom has never shown the name
of the program that opens it. Only an icon, a file name,
and a file size.

No I did not mean that it showed the name of the program that opens it

What I meant it showed a icon "in this case a yellow back ground with PDF in black on top " on the
left then the name of the PDF file like "1326470701.pdf"

All that said it still will not open a dam pdf file unless I save it to my hard drive then open it
from there.

If you have not got anything in the 'Application' box, then
Agent will try to show the icon associated with .pdf files.
Not the icon of the program that opens .pdf files.

The icon associated with .pdf files is the icon you see
next to a .pdf file in Windows File Explorer.

It sounds like this is what Agent is doing. Agent is showing
the icon associated with .pdf files instead of the icon of the
program that opens .pdf files.

> All that said it still will not open a dam pdf file unless I save it to my hard drive then open it
> from there.

Why you cannot open .pdf file attachments is a different issue to
what icon is showing.

Here, for example, .jpeg files, .txt files, and .zip files all show
the icon associated with the file, not the icon of the program that
opens the file. Yet I can still open .jpeg, .txt, and .zip file
attachments in Agent.

The real issue is that you cannot open .pdf files from Agent. Don't
worry about what icon is showing. The icon is not the issue.

>>>> 7......made certain that my pdf program is the default in windows 10

The reason why you cannot open a .pdf file from Agent may be this:

The default for .pdf files may be set only in the new part of the
Windows registry used by programs written for Windows 10/11, but
not in the older part of the registry used by XP-compatible
programs (like Agent).

There are two ways to fix this

(a) Hack the Windows registry to add settings in the old location.
or
(b) Set the correct stuff in the 'Application' box in Agent's
MIME types.

The correct stuff may look something like this, including
all four quote marks shown. Exact details depend on your
PDF reader and where it is installed.

"C:\Program Files\SumatraPDF\SumatraPDF.exe" "%1"

SORRY RALPH

I think we are at crossed purpose

It is nothing to do with the icon at all.
All I said about that was that it did not show at all now it only shows

"1326470701.pdf"
xxxxxx.bytes

BUT when it was working it did show that icon yellow back ground on top of that PDF in black then
the file name
HOPE I have explained it now better

Ralph

I have now installed Forta Agent on another computer that has got the SumatraPDF program on
just to test it out.
I have left all the defaults as is from agent and it all works with that install

So do you think some thing as gone wrong with the other install where it does not show PDF file?

If That is the case then why does it work on my other computer BTW it is the same as this one

Do not know why the other computer worked with just the defaults.
