All I know for certain is that at "random" intervals clicking on
Eudora's "fetch mail" button causes "blue screen of death" failure.

It reboots right nicely, and then windows notifies me that it is
recovering, blah blah, "check for solution?" I click yes, and the
popup disappears.

What do I use to go through the memory dump files, what would I
be searching for when I'm there, and what does it all mean?

And - recommendations for replacement of Eudora, and migrating the
associated three decades of mailbox archives?

Are you running Eudora on Win7? I have it on WinXP. It has been
troublesome on Win7. I still keep it there for those 'years of
mailboxes' which I have to copy/paste over in Explorer. (a .bat file
wouldn't work). Nice to know there's a few Eudora junkies still out
there. No other email client ever equaled it.

It's actually quite difficult nowadays to intentionally trigger a BSOD
_without_ elevated privileges. If BSOD occurs, it's not due to common
applications - which are run in user space, and are normally run without
elevated privileges.

The actual error occurs during code execution with elevated privileges,
which always happen in the kernel space. Device drivers also run in the the
kernel space. And hardwares are handled by device drivers.

So, there are 3 categories of possible places: the kernel (the OS itself), a
device driver, and a hardware.

An error dump contains the type of the error, the location where the error
occured, and what drivers are involved. The (small) memory part of the dump
contains the memory data used for the execution of the involved functions.
The optional full memory dump contains the memory data used for the involved
functions themselves.

Without familiarity with OS internals, programming knowledge, _and_ the
software source codes (as references); it'll be impossible to know right
away what have caused it. By far, it would only serve as a hint of the many
possibilities of what have caused it.

Pinpointing the location of the actual cause of the error itself is
difficult. The error location can be either in the OS kernel, or a device
driver; and the error may occur at different locations. This is because an
error can be a gradual error. Meaning that, when it occurs, it's not
initially a severe error. But as the errorneous command/result is passed
to/from device drivers and the OS kernel (where each would process it), it
would become more and more errorneous. The severity of the error would
gradually increase until it's severe enough to trigger a BSOD.

So, the OS kernel or any of the involved device driver, are all possible
culprits. And remember, the error might came from the hardwares themselves.
e.g. errorneous hardware command causes the hardware to give incorrect
result, or the hardware gave an errorneous result due to hardware failure,
or power supply instability which may affect any device attached to the
computer. Power supply problem is usually the most difficult to pinpoint.

The type of the error in the dump can be used to minimize the possible
causes, because the error codes are only applicable for specific type of
device, or specific device, or specific type of device driver.

But even after minimizing the possible causes, there will still be multiple
possible causes. So, the only thing left to do is to isolate the problem, by
checking each one. Keeping in mind the devices which are involved to a
device driver.

It's always worth doing a search for all or part of the error
code. You may find discussions where others have had
similar problems. I'm not aware of any comprehensive listing,
but the codes themselves do have meaning.

I've never used Eudora. There's no program to convert the
stored messages? There is software to convert MS DBX files.
TBird uses a very simple plain text format. But I don't know
about Eudora. I expect your best bet would be to find a way
to extract the emails in basic .eml text format and then import
them to TBird.

So that's the first thing you need to fix.

A BSOD can stop, and show itself on the screen properly.

But the "automatic reboot" can be set, which causes the
BSOD to disappear before you can manually record it.

Like Paul says, that might be worth changing so that it doesn't auto
reboot, but it doesn't really matter because the dump files can be
viewed at any time, not just during a crash.

I'd use BlueScreenView from Nirsoft. No installation required, just
download and run it. It'll find your dump files and offer to display
them for you. You'll be looking for the STOP code and perhaps what the
system thinks is the offending driver, although I take that with a grain
of salt.

I too used Eudora for a looooong time.

When I reinstalled the OS, I was always able to copy-and-paste the Eudora install
folder into the new Windows install and everything would work as expected.

One thing I do, when using 7/10, is that knowing I'll be using a few pieces of legacy
software, I never install them under c:\Program Files (x86)\ (They're never 64 bit
programs.)

I install older apps to c:\Programs\ to clear them of the usual UAC control.

I would try doing that, and see if that helps at all. (...if you haven't already done similar.)

It's years since I used Eudora, a nice email client and your post
intrigued me enough to have a look beyond the usual Thunderbird and
Outlook clients.

I came across this one called Hexamail.
https://www.hexamail.com/hexamailflow/

I have never heard of it before so I cannot recommend it but I did
notice it is free for home use and it does import Eudora mail, along
with a lot of other features.

I found robocopy.exe to be helpful for massive moves, as well as
synchronizing files from one computer to another. (Like back and
forth to school computers.)

Which is why I've stuck with it all these years.

There are two possibilities. One would be a program to conver
the emails. another would be a method like a script to extract them.
When I searched I immediately found results for converting eudora
email to .eml files.
From there I'm not sure whether TBird can import them directly.
It's set up to import from specific programs. But an eml file can just
bre drag-dropped, so at worst you could make folders and simply
drop your converted emails in the window.
That's assuming TBird. I don't know what else is possible. Aside
from spyware webmail, there are not many options these days.
And TBird is at least serviceable. It's a neglected category because
so many people either use webmail on a laptop or don't use email at all.

https://www.greennet.org.uk/support/how-migrateimport-eudora-windows-thunderbird

Now, that might be Eudora OSE to Thunderbird they're referring to.

Maybe you could do Eudora to Eudora OSE first (a Eudora to newer Eudora transfer),
then do Eudora OSE to Thunderbird as the second step.

In any case, you'd start with a backup, if you did not want a lot
of cruft and state changes from all the transition attempts.

Once you have a Thunderbird profile folder, you can save that off,
then do a restore as desired, then move forward and fit the Thunderbird profile.

I'd say there are a few ways to do it, and
without resorting to .eml. Thunderbird supports .eml as a
native thing (like pulling and storing the emails as .eml),
but Yousef was the only one who managed to get Thunderbird
into that mode of operation. It's harder to find more
modern versions that will stay in .eml mode for everything.
What happens is, you start Thunderbird, and all of a sudden
it's using Mork again. It has a mind of its own, and it's not
interested in your attempts to change the about:config settings.

I did a couple tests here at the time, when Yousef was dealing
with his .eml setup, and could not get my clean installs to
stay in .eml mode. The issue he had, was possibly related
to Windows Defender scanning the profile folder (full of .eml)
while you're trying to work, with a large loss of performance.

I'm not sure I follow you. I have TBird 52. It stores email
as one long text string, with markers between each email.
I think the marker is something simple, like "From: ". It can
accept a .EML file dropped into the window. And if I drag it out
to the desktop, it exports as .eml. Presumably any EMLs
dragged in will get stored in the default format.

From the replies you've received it's clear that Eudora is an old
program, designed to run on an earlier OS - maybe Windows XP?

If you're running it on a more recent OS (Win 7/8/10/11) have you tried
running it in compatibility mode for an older OS? That can often fix
incompatibility problems. Don't give up on Eudora without trying that.

There was a claim that Thunderbird had a second mode
of storing incoming mail. However, I couldn't get this to work
properly on a clean install. It kept flipping to Berkeley on its own.

mail.server.server1.storeContractID = @mozilla.org/msgstore/maildirstore;1

mail.server.server4.storeContractID = @mozilla.org/msgstore/berkeleystore;1

Berkeleystore, as far as I know, is the "file per box" (Sent) method.

Maildirstore, is a file per message method, like an EML at a guess.
You can see this better than I can, as mine are all
going to be Berkeleystore.

I never noticed that before. I have file per folder, which
seems fine. It's very simple to convert that to EML files if
I want to. And in the GUI it still imports/exports EML.

Okay, the pop-up shows up after the reboot.

I don't want to give up on it. I'm just annoyed by this "sudden"
spate of BSOD which occurs after I click on "get mail".

There are a ton of pages on finding crash dumps, finding
Event Viewer entries, and so on. Did you get a MEMORY.DMP ?
Get to work, dammit :-)

It could be bad RAM.

It could be an "IRQL less or equals".

There are many possibilities, and your mission
is to gather the evidence.

If it's a BSOD, stopping the automatic reboot is for the
satisfaction of making the message stand still on the
screen.

You can point a camcorder or a digital point and shoot camera with
video capability, at a (temporary) BSOD screen. The BSOD will stay
on the screen for several frame times, and even with a camcorder,
you might capture the frame with the BSOD on it, before the
automatic reboot occurs.

Now all I have to do is have a camera ready to go when I'm reading
email.
