New install on Lenovo T430S.

All working except.

Files from Win Explorer cannot be dragged on to an app.

NAS drives visibility
Have set drive letters on all NAS drives.
App sees only one NAS drive. Others not visible.
App works ok on another Lenovo T430s laptop.

I cannot change permissions of some NAS drives.
Do I need to install ?

There is no login on Windows.

I have to us Run as Administrator to Firefox, Thunderbird(eMail) and
Seamonkey(newsgroups).
Now all installed and working.

Run as Administrator for other apps not needed for install.

Are what you call NAS drives in a RAID in one NAS unit? If yes maybe
duplicates of one primary so others not visible.

When you start Seamonkey, it starts as an un-elevated process.
If Seamonkey decides an upgrade is required, it uses a UAC
prompt, to elevate. Only a member of Administrator group could
upgrade their Seamonkey.

Other browsers have "helpers", and it is the helper (runs as a service)
which is elevated, which helps avoid the need for the primary
application to elevate.

As for a permissions model, I'll only make a general comment, seeing
as you are so messed up. In a business, there would be a Domain Server,
and authentications all pass through it. This allows the machines
to have unified permissions, and "one SID is all you need" for a
seamless experience. Your local disks are handled just as smoothly
in that case, as remote disks.

In a non-Domain setup (which is what you and I use), Logging in as "Dave"
on the local machine is not the same as logging in as "Dave" on any foreign
device. Windows uses an "approximation" to a permissions model. There
are more "implied Takeown" operations, you see a green bar grow on the
screen, as the permissions are "coerced" so it looks like you are the owner.

You can also go to your NAS and apply ownership there. Say you have a folder
that you want "Dave" to own. When you apply "Dave", is it the symbolic
"Dave" (logs in as Dave from any LAN machine), or is the ownership
restricted to 11111-22222-33333-1001 which is Dave only on the "Cedar"
Windows machine ? We don't know, and we have to check to see what is
going on. A NAS does not even need to run NTFS on its SAMBA/CIFS,
it could be using EXT4 at the disk level, and it could "fake" the
appearance of the file system for the benefit of any visitor.

"Cedar" NAS "Juniper"

Corei7 Corei5
Win7 Pro Win10 Pro

User="Dave" User="Dave" User="Dave"
pass="Mypw" pass="Mypw" pass="Mypw"

If all the machines share a common account like that, it makes
the share experience more smooth. However, all the machines
are their own machine with their own rules. When a login succeeds,
the share is coerced to make it look as seamless as a domain,
but sometimes it will need help.

If each machine has quite irregular accounts, Cedar can still log
into NAS as "Fred" "Pw02" and do stuff. But it can be very confusing,
as an attempt to access Juniper needs a different account details
to be typed in. From Cedar, I have to log into Juniper as "Barney".

"Cedar" NAS "Juniper"

Corei7 Corei5
Win7 Pro Win10 Pro

User="Dave" User="Fred" User="Barney"
pass="Mypw" pass="Pw02" pass="Pw03"

I don't know the details well enough, to fix every problem you've
got, and that's why I am just making a general comment about
how poor the experience can be for non-Domain users.

The SAMBA/CIFS shares should all be in the same workgroup=WORKGROUP
kinds thing. That's one excuse for something to not show up.
And it's also possible for one File Explorer window to show different
NASes available, than some other dialog. If you restart the application
with the incorrect dialog, perhaps it will inherit the current Explorer
model. Just as refreshes in Explorer (pressing F5) are sometimes
necessary for changes to appear.

When you use the computers, you can occasionally see a glimmer
that the experience was supposed to be seamless, but boy,
does the fit and finish suck. If it was a car, you'd be in
a ditch by now, because the car would just steer in any
random direction it felt like.

Thanks for this input.

Seems that I turned off UAC and forgot to boot. UAC was still doing
stuff in the background though not showing its ugly head.
