If you can see that page then you presumably don't care about
privacy. Statcounter is one of the most ubiquitous tracking
companies. It should be in your HOSTS file if you care about
not being tracked. (And don't even imagine they're going to
pass up the chance to sell that data to anyone holding out
some cash.) You can get the same data from Wikipedia without
the spying:

There are also numerous other Wikipedia pages with usage stats.
But most of this is really about people buying and keeping computers.
Updating or choosing an OS is rare. There's also the corporate
market. Shares typically vary on weekdays vs weekend. I'm
guessing the low Win8 takeup is due to corporate. They stuck
with 7 as long as possible. Probably many of the current Win7
computers are corporate.

With Win11, MS is pushing it and stores are carrying less and
less Win10. So very little of this is about preference.

Then there's also the issue of where statcounter tracks. The
more commercial, the more they'll see it. The first place I go for
news every day is Slashdot. No statcounter there. If I were to
fire up Win10 it would probably be for shopping research on
poorly designed retail websites, such as department stores.
They're likely to have statcounter.

I use XP but use a Win7 or Win10 userAgent. If I didn't then some
sites would refuse to work. It's also more anonymous. I also have
a Win7 computer that I use occasionally for websites that won't
work on XP, and to stream movies to a TV. And I recently bought
a cheap Win10 laptop on a lark.

When I got Win7 I spent some weeks cleaning it up. With Win10,
it's a spyware mess. I just downloaded Classic Shell, ShutUp10,
and anything else I could find to make it more usable. But I don't
use it very much. So for me, Win7 is sort of in between. I don't
really have Win7-specific issues. And unlike the Win10 newsgroup,
Win7 desn't get all those posts about auto updating:
"Holy mother of Christ! What did they do with my taskbar?!"

I liked '9x and XP, but just for sheer usefulness, I think I'd find them
tedious to use now (I know still mostly possible [XP anyway] if you're
willing to put in the time). [I was sort of forced by the death of my XP

We're all different! I've found 10 (which I have to use for voluntary
work, and to help friends) sufficiently alien _for no reason I can see
benefits me_ that I don't want to move. (11 is academic: I was rather
amused to get a full slate when I tried this machine on the checker: it
failed on every single line!) But if you find it (10 and 11) suits you
_better_, that's fine - and probably will make life easier for you and
harder for me, going forward.

And I take the 10 'group because it often mentions things that are
relevant on 7! (As well as keeping me _somewhat_ up to date with the
latest problems on 10.) I still take the XP (and '98, though that's
_very_ quiet!) 'groups for a similar reason to you.

Indeed we're all different. When I reluctantly moved from 7 to 10 a
couple of years ago, I found it far less different from 7 than reading

In UK English, both forms are in common usage for the noun (the
substance), though only the shorter one for the verb. In fact I think
the shorter one's commoner for the noun - perhaps except allegorically
as here.

I got curious and looked it up. Originally Scottish/Irish.

And Bowdler, after all, was English. In the US we do
sometimes have quasi-Christian ninnies trying to make
everytyhing safe for 5 year olds. (Except for gory movie
violence, of course.) But I think we're less shy of vulgarity.

of giving the middle finger. Two fingers, I was told, was
the polite way to say "Fuck you!". Use of only the middle
finger should be reserved for only the most extreme cases.

It was an interesting irony. How British to insult or attack
while pretending that one is not actually doing so. On the other
