I have this problem

I have been using forte agent with a email with no problem for ages

BUT now for some reason I keep getting this error

"server xxxxx rejected your user name and password(login to your account via a web browser to verify
your account"

I know the user name and password are 100 % correct

I log into my account vi Firefox with the SAME password with no problem

I then go to tools/server account (in forte agent )and click on test account and it comes back with

"ALL LOOKS GOOD"

But if I go to click get email that error keeps coming back

With me logging onto my account thru Firefox with the same password I know that is correct

SO WHY when I do a test from the server page in Forte Agent it comes back and tells me every thing
looks okay?

BUT if I close agent down and then load up again then try the test connection I get the

"server xxxxx rejected your user name and password(login to your account via a web browser to verify
your account" again. BUT I still can get on my emails thru fire fox.

I have made certain that my email is correct made a NEW one

This is with hotmail account like the below

pop-mail.outlook.com

Many thanks

Dumb Blonde

Fine... IS THE LOGIN METHOD CORRECT? It might have changed? If you were
using "simple login" you may now need "secure login".

Yes all is correct.

Also why does Agent say "all looks good" from the test page then if I try again it comes with that
error.

I have been and changed my password then gone in to Agent put my new password in and it WORKS BUT
shut agent down the open it up again SAME error

I just cannot under stand if I log into hotmail.com/live.com from the web it all works fine so the
password etc is all correct

Passwords are saved in the agent.ini file (in an encoded format, but
don't post it by accident <G>).

Is your agent.ini file being updated to reflect a change in password?
If you've somehow managed to get the file set to read-only it won't take
changes.

You'd stated that it worked immediately after a password change, but
failed AFTER a shutdown/restart. It is during that shutdown/restart that
the INI file would be modified/read. Prior to that it is all "in memory"
settings being used.

This frequently means that Hotmail is seeing "unusual activity" on the
email interface, but not on the web interface.

The "unusual activity" could be any of many different things, such
as:

a) Someone is trying to hack your account and get your password,
by using a program which tries different passwords over one of
the email interfaces (POP, SMTP, IMAP).

b) Your computer is sending spam. Perhaps your computer is infected
with a spam-bot which sends spam on behalf of its bot-master.

c) You have been sending emails to an unusually large number of
people. Hotmail does not know that it is really you and not a
spam-bot.
(For example, perhaps you are emailing the entire membership of
the Roundhead Party seeking support for Phileas Fogg to be the
new party leader.)

> I have been and changed my password then gone in to Agent put my new password in and it WORKS BUT
> shut agent down the open it up again SAME error

Which might mean there has been more of that "unusual activity"
(whatever it happens to be), between when it worked and when you got
the same error.

1. Did you click on test account in the *Inbound* email or *Outbound*
email settings?

2. Was there any time between clicking on test account, and clicking
get email? Time for any "unusual activity" to happen?

3. It is also relevant to find whether the error was in response to the
same command from Agent to the server that worked in "test account",
or whether it was in response to a different command from Agent to
the server.

To find that, use Agent to create a *verbose* debug log of both cases.

This one [13.101.125.236] is from something running in Microsoft's
Azure cloud. That does *not* mean it is Microsoft doing this. Many
organizations have moved their computing into the cloud, and many of
those organizations are using Microsoft's Azure cloud. It could even
be a UK organization which is using Microsoft's Azure cloud.

For example, say you want xxxorg in the UK to alert you when your
hotmail account gets new mail. You entered your hotmail account
details in the UK xxxorg server. But xxxorg no longer runs on-prem
physical servers. All the UK xxxorg servers are in the cloud, in
the Azure cloud and paying rent to Microsoft.

Or it could be a hacker (as I suggested in 'a' below) who is also
renting a virtual server in the Azure cloud.

Are you confident enough to click the "This wasn't me" button?

Only if you assume the bot-master is going to use all email accounts equally.

You wrote below that you have this problem on two of your hotmail accounts.

(I am presuming that "other emails" means other email *accounts*,
not other email messages or other email something-elses.)

3.1 With Agent closed,
* Edit your AGENT.INI file
* In the [Debugging] section of AGENT.INI,
change VerboseLog=0 to VerboseLog=1.

3.2 Before you do either of these things (click test account or
try to get mail), open the Task Log window
Tools >> Task Log

3.3 In the Task Log window, commands from Agent to the server are
prefixed with ‘<’ while responses from the server to Agent
are prefixed with ‘>’.

The error message will come in a response prefixed with ‘<’.
Look back up in the log for the previous line prefixed with ‘<’
to see which command from Agent to the server caused the error.

3.4 You cannot copy the text from the Task Log window, unfortunately.
But you can get Agent to create a log file with the same content
as the Task Log window. For details, see steps 1 through 7 in
this message:

The IP might be doing this on *your* behalf, as in the example in my
paragraph above which begins with "For example, say you want xxxorg
in the UK...".

> There is LOADS OF THEM from that IP

So there is loads from a server-in-the-cloud. Is it a UK company
using that server-in-the-cloud? Is it a company you are using?

These days with cloud-based computing, the location of the server
does not have to match the location of the company.

The Task Log window must be opened *before* you try to connect to
the mail server.
The Task Log window must stay open while you try to connect to the
mail server.
The Task Log window only shows stuff that happens while the Task Log
window stays open. The task log window is cleared when it is closed.
Look at the Task Log window after you have tried to connect to
the mail server but before you close the Task Log window.
