I have generated a minimal case which displays the problems I mentioned earlier
under MacOS Mojave using TeXLive 2021 bundled by MacTeX.

=== begin bad.tex source ===
\begin{document}
%deliberately missing closing $ after \simeq
Reduces the background count rate by a factor of $R$ ($R\simeq 1/(1-.89)
= 9.1 for the shielding I used).
\end{document}
=end bad.tex source ===

Here's the terminal output upon running " latex bad.tex ":

This is pdfTeX, Version 3.141592653-2.6-1.40.22 (TeX Live 2021) (preloaded format=pdflatex)

I confirm as well, with this input

--- badlatex.tex
\documentclass{article}

\begin{document}
% deliberately missing closing $
$ \end{document}
---

produces when entering `e' at the error prompt:

? e
No pages of output.
Transcript written on badlatex.log.
pdflatex:calledit: unexpected if_ptr=5 not in range 1..1,from input_stack[2].namefield=39066

With (Plain) tex the file
---
$ \bye
---

triggers similar crash under `e'.

Seems indeed to be same issue indeed as discussed at https://tug.org/pipermail/tex-k/2021-April/003542.html

Cheers, Jean-François

Crashes on Catalina too.

Here's some information (with a patch suggestion) where apparently the bug has been reported, but I don't know of any patches.

https://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/594702/apparent-bug-in-pdflatex-xelatex-but-not-lualatex

If anyone learns anything that would be appreciated, the "e" way out of errors in LaTeX is fundamental for me.
