This machine runs SeaMonkey 2.49.4 on Debian 9.13 .
This is my *BACKUP* machine.
My primary machine [running current software ;] is unavailable.

The relevant profile has 2 email & 3 newsgroup accounts.

When attempting to add an additional email account by clicking on
"Create a new account", the "Account Wizard" does _not_ appear.
It dumps me into the process for adding an additional newsgroup.

The other profiles behave as expected.

How do I diagnose the problem?
I have two goals:
1. Solve the immediate problem, making a as few changes as possible.
2. Get an idea of what may have triggered the problem so I can avoid
a recurrence.

Help please.

From the release notes
<https://www.seamonkey-project.org/releases/seamonkey2.49.4/>:

> After creating a news account through clicking a news URL, the MailNews account wizard may be broken (the account type will always be News). To work around the problem, set the mail.server.serverX.valid pref (where X is the internal number of the corresponding news account) to true in about:config, or delete the invalid news account (bug 521861).

(still in the release notes for current versions, for what it's worth)

I had a problem along these lines a few weeks ago. Don't forget to
terminate Seamonkey after having taken your "remediation" steps. That
was not in the documentation I saw but it turned out to be essential.

That got me pointed in the right direction.
I blindly removed a newsgroup has been having server problems.

Using "?" as a wild-card, does about:config something have that would
emulate
mail.server.server?.valid

Thank you

The '?" is the Account number .... i.e. your email account would
probably be 'server1', the "Local Folders" would be 'server2', your
first NNTP Server 'server3', your next NNTP Server 'server4', etc., etc..

AFAIK about:config doesn't support extended matching via wildcards or
even regexes. But entering ".valid" will probably be a pretty good
filter in this case.

Although "?" doesn't seem to work to match any single character, "*"
does seem to work to match any number of characters. So you can use:
mail.server.server*.valid
or:
mail.server.*.valid

Or, as Mike suggested, just searching for ".valid" doesn't throw up too
many other entries in this case.
