I feel like I knew that before, but I seem to have issues with this
right now.
I started using POP3 for my gmail inbox and am pulling mails from there.
It started pulling the mails from some time somewhere in 2017, which is
ok, I guess, but it then slowed down how many it pulled. I switched off
the option to leave the mails on the server and it sped up, but now it
again slowed down to pulling 1-4 messages per connection. Is there a way
to speed that up somehow?

Right now it slowly (1-4 mails per minute, the occasional one in the
double digits) is working it's way towards the end of 2019 and there's 4
more years to go before I might arrive at a usable inbox.

Ask Google. TB downloads all of the mails in one go by default.
BTW: Why are you using this old and unflexible mail protocol and not IMAP?

Go into Gmail on the web and trash some emails? You won't have to pull them all then.

I was not asking.
I would not use Gmail under any circumstances. Even not with IMAP.

Because I have experienced even worse performance issues with IMAP than
with POP3.

Great. Given Google's insideous nature, it's hard to avoid. I don't use
my Gmail as my main address, I need it for service-related emails from
Google, and I use the account for the hoops I have to jump through to
test outbound mail to make sure I've got the settings as Google demands.

It's truly hard to avoid Google on the Web as so many Web sites use
Google's tools, even with script and various Google tools blocked with
browser add ons.
