Google having killed off the straightforward HTML client and
requiring some bloated piece of dreck, I want to add my gmail
accounts to Mac TB 115.8.0 (64-bit)

I reseached and found

I did as requested, chose IMAP, see IMAP SSL/TLS and after doing
so it puts me on a TBird login screen, with username filled in.

"Sign in to to continue to Email or phone"

When prompted for the password, I enter it.

Then I get:

400. That's an error.

The server cannot process the request because it is
malformed. It should not be retried. That's all we know.

Do I have to manually configure Gmail accounts or?

Did you already change your settings in Gmail to allow access by IMAP?
This always trips me up when I change machines.

In looking to see if Gmail instructions had changed, I found this note:

Gmail users with a personal Google Account

In June 2024, the option to choose "Enable IMAP" or "Disable IMAP" won't
be available. IMAP access is always turned on in Gmail, and your current
connections to other email clients aren't affected. You don't need to
take any action.

Also on that same page, the frustration of whether one uses 2-Step
Verification is enabled on the Google account and the use of an app
password, in which the password is created on the Google side then saved
in the email client.

I cannot emphasize enough that the app password is a password specific
to the client and is not the Google account password.

Use of the app password is the method Google less prefers if the client
offers "Sign In With Google", the OAuth 2.0 method.

To host your E-mail, get a paid account with a real ISP.

It is also a good idea to create a personal domain so that you do not
have to notify those in your address book if you change E-mail hosts.

I have both an independent mail server, and a domain of my own.

But I must use gmail address for activities related to Google.
When there was a HTML Gmail client, that was acceptable.

But since they kiboshed that and now force a multimegabyte
script-driven comic book client down our throats, it was time to
make those accounts usable in a text-based, local client.
