Thanks to both Jean-Francois and Eberhard Lisse for suggestions!

I systematically introduced SIMPLE errors into my file at various
locations, and have been unable to reproduce the problem. This means that
using 'e' to launch vi/vim at the file location with the LaTeX-flagged
error is working fine once again. Thus I conclude that it is POSSIBLE
to have exotic text errors in a LaTeX file which somehow block the
auto-launch of (in my case) vi. I guess I took the exotic
error message

/Library/TeX/texbin/pdflatex:calledit: unexpected if_ptr=3 not in range 1..1,from input_stack[2].namefield=21445

as an indication of some sort of system problem, which I now believe
it probably is NOT.
