I have replaced win7 with ubuntu-16.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso.

Went without a hitch, except that the installer found a network
printer in another building , leaving a huge stack of try-out prints......
All looking fine.
However it did not find the Canon MF4140 laser printer software,
that was attached to the USB2 port.
Allowing the generic text printer did not work.
And Canon did not have the printer in the list the installer offered.

Anybody know a solution?

Test prints ended up at.the network printer in another building
and made somebody very angry.........

PS: General usage will be browser and email.

No, don't use it anymore, it is insecure and the repo is switched off.
23.10 will most likely run on it, maybe choose another desktop
environment like LXQt instead of GNOME.

I guess that 23.10 is worth a try. Mind you, if he wants something that
at least looks like Win7 I would have thought that Linux Mint 21.2 with
Cinnamon desktop might be a better choice.

As to the question he asked about his Canon printer, the answer is
probably going to be along the lines that Canon suck when it comes to
supporting Linux! However, this might be of use:

No, newer Ubuntu will work just fine. My ThinkPad L530 is running 22.04
LTS and a HP Elitebook of the same year is running 23.04.

To OP I would suggest installing the stable LTS version 22.04 LTS

Now about the printer: Unfortunately *Canon* is one of the most
unfriendly Linux manufacturer out there and often most of their products
are Windows only. That said, sometime they do support Linux, but hide it
very well, especially in USA. You have to search Europe divisions and it

Sorry, that link lets you select the printer and linux 64 bit,
but then when you click drivers, nothing happens.

I hope I can convince ubuntu to eat that file somehow.....

Just like the printers, their site kinda sucks. Scroll down a bit and
you'll see the "Individual Drivers" heading, with a subheading (and
download button) for:

"UFRII/UFRII LT Printer Driver v5.70"
