I've had some issues "upgrading" to 115.8.1 (from 102.15) using the same
version of Linux Mint (21.3), but as a new install on a new laptop.

The first problem was that copying the old profile to the new
..thunderbird folder and changing the path in the .ini file didn't work
(I had deleted the new profile TB created on first use). What I did to
get it to recognise the old profile was to move the 12345678.default
folder out to a temp folder and import it from that. That worked ok, but
then I had to add all the account passwords (I thought TB kept those
with the profile, but it seems not). I'm not sure that they're sticking
though, as I've had to re-enter them after the reboots I do while
setting up the new laptop. Also, it seems that the calendar info, which
I thought was in the old profile, is missing. The calendar is blank. Is
the best way to get to it to save the calendar info on my old laptop as
a *.ics file, and then copy it over and import that into the new TB?

The new appearance is a bit strange, but it's not a deal breaker. It
*is* a space-waster though, particularly the two lines in in the message
subject name pane.

One last thing (until I find something else...). I can't remember how to
change the newsgroups account names from the abbreviated version to the
full name. I guess it's in the setup prefs somewhere but I couldn't see it.

First copy the complete profile to a place that suits you. Best is
probably Home where I have it. You do that on both machines. Then open
the terminal and write

sudo thunderbird -profiles

Use the profile manager to access the profile in the future.

I've installed Mint, LMDE, and other variations and have simply deleted the .thunderbird profile
that was created, and copied my new .thunderbird folder in. It's worked everytime. Calendar,
Cardbook, Addressbook, Email, Passwords for emails etc. I'm missing nothing.

I do make sure that if the old system is /home/alan that the new system is the same.

That's basically what I first tried and it didn't work. Then doing the
export/import profile method I got all the mail and newsgroup folders
(including local folders), but no calendar. I came across this bug which
doesn't seem to have been resolved
<https://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=3110539>, but maybe it
has elsewhere.

I'll try the export/import calendar method, but I'm not hopeful after
reading that bug. If it doesn't work I may simply purge TB 115 and
install 102. I've still got the original 102 profile (which, I
understand 115 has probably changed), so I'll work with that until 115
is completely usable. It's one reason I stayed with 102 on my old
laptop. Or perhaps I'll try Betterbird first.

(I used "reply" to reply to your post, which is the same as I've always
done with v102. But it didn't appear, and I see it has gone to
alan@invalid.com! No error message has come back that the address isn't
valid, which seems a bit odd.)

I tried that but got:
jeff@jeff:~$ sudo thunderbird -profiles
[sudo] password for jeff:
Running Thunderbird as root in a regular user's session is not
supported. ($XAUTHORITY is /home/jeff/.Xauthority which is owned by jeff.)
jeff@jeff:~$

I'll try the same thing in my old laptop to see if the same message
appears. If it doesn't it looks like it's a permissions thing with my
new 21.3 install.

Export/import the *.ics worked. I've now got to do a bit of tidying up
and reading how to get TB 115's interface more usable for me, but at
least it's operational.

Well, I'm thinking of opening a mattress factory with all the hair I've
been pulling out!

It's just taken me nearly an hour to find out how to get the message
pane showing a single line and "staggered" thread view ("table view").
Why? Because the brain-dead devs didn't put this option in the "view"
menu, but put it in the quick filter bar options. I have that hidden as
I never use it. TB is supposed to have table view enabled by default on
a new install, but it wasn't in my case. And it took another search to
find out how to remove the abbreviated newsgroup name. Sigh. Almost there...
