I have accrued 100s of NG subscriptions, but most of them haven't been
updated for years. I have configured TB/BB to show only unread posts.
How can I keep all my subscriptions but reset the counter, that is as if
I subscribed for the first time?

That's the opposite of what I want. I want to reset the NG to its
initial state, as if no message was read.

Right-click newsgroup, select properties. Copy name of newsgroup.
Right-click newsgroup, select unsubscribe, confirm.
Go to Manage Newsgroup Subscriptions, paste copied name into search box
Select subscribe.
That will get all newsgroup messages that are still on the server.

Locate the newsrc file for your news reader. Should be in the
Thunderbird default profile News directory, e.g.:

..thunderbird/j******.default-default/News$

There will be a newsrc file located therein, e.g.:

newsrc-news.eternal-september.com

Mine looks like this:

$ cat newsrc-news.eternal-september.com
alt.trucks.ford: 1-2581
alt.comp.software.thunderbird: 1-12258,12276-12278
alt.alt.test: 1-7919
alt.os.linux.slackware: 1-34461
alt.comp.os.linux: 1-2096

Reset the numbers to 1-1 for each group and save/exit the file.

Do this with the reader closed, of course.

Thanks. I'll probably go for this method. I'd have to write a script
that does that. It's 100s of NGs.

Try:

Right-clicking a group,
Clicking properties,
Clicking `Repair Newsgroup` in the properties window.

N.B. you will likely get one or two popups about the number of messages
to be downloaded. -- I see the popup once for the newsgroup if I'm not
currently viewing said newsgroup. I see the popup twice for if I am
viewing the newsgroup.

That should download all the message headers again as well as (re)run
all current filters.

This assumes that I've understood what you're wanting to do.

Aside: I've found that needing to edit a file under Thunderbird, while
it's closed, is usually a good hint that there is likely another way to
do similar, if not the same, thing inside of Thunderbird. Usually, but
not always.

As for a script to edit the file;

mv newsrc newsrc.backup
awk '{print $1, "1-1"}' newsrc.backup > newsrc

Adjust the file names as necessary

And this is the absolute winner. Thanks. It worked like a charm. I was
experimenting with sed but it didn't work.

I absolutely understand and appreciate that feeling.

My newsrc file is 501 lines long. Just a few newsgroups. }:-)

Do keep the repair newsgroup in the back of your mind as you can do it
on an as-needed basis if a newsgroup starts acting strange at some point
in the future. But a click-fest wholesale is no fun.

I ended up using this route instead. The other solution did reset the
counter but downloaded all messages from the beginning of time.
