There is also another factor. Within TB each newsgroup has a local
retention period, usually just a month or so by default.

Unsubscribe and resubscribe. That should get you everything available.

My sites and servers require registration and email verification to post.

If someone finds spam from my servers they should let me know, but it's not
happening any more than from other servers.

Just because you can read articles without an account does not mean you can
post.

That depends on the newsserver you are using.
My Thunderbird gives all messages that the newsserver carry,
At the gmane/gwene newsservers in some groups there are messages from 2005.

Eternal-September has different retention times for different newsgroups.
Could be some months or many years.

How long have you been using TB?
Take a look into Account Settings/ Synchronization and Storage. The
default setting is 30 days retention.
When you first download for a group, you'll get the option to acquire
all messages available. Thereafter TB will do housekeeping on them.

I can't find an appropriate setting within About Config to prove that,
but with TB 115.8.0/Win 11 the sync and storage settings within my
Eternal-september account are whatever TB has decided (i.e. its
default) from version/profile iterations dating back almost three
years, April 2021.

The *Sync & Storage* Disc Space radio button definitely shows "Don't
delete any messages"

The "Delete messages more than..." with 30 days (variable) is greyed
out.

The oldest msg's I can open on a.c.s.t'bird /E-s are dated mid-May
2022, thus from E-s retention.

Older headers remain back to early April 2021 when I opened the E-s
account after ditching Newshosting.

"don't delete any" and the setting for the group has "use my server

Yes. My query "Really?" is to state that I've never changed any of
the settings within either the E-s account or the T'bird group
properties (using server as the control).

Thus I'd consider what I have/see as *default*. It would've been nice
to have tracked down whatever is altered in about-config as *bold*
would've indicated non-default, and why I typed "prove".

Creating a new profile establishes exactly the same settings *by
default*, i.e. radio button is automatically selected as "Don't delete
any messages".

Thus I think it's fair to say that Ed Cryer's claim of "The
default setting is 30 days retention" is not valid.
