A 9 volt battery is 6 cells
A vintage 32 volt lighting system was 16 cells
An older POTS 48 volt backup system was 24 cells
Our concert Hall had a 110 volt emergency light system of 55 cells.
Electric cars have umpteen dozen cells. :-)

Wishing a Merry and Happy Christmas to all, and stay well

As do most people.

It's one cell, yes; it isn't* a battery.

Yes

* I know (my brother works for the dictionary) that language changes;
I'm sure now "battery" _does_ include single cells. I just remember a
time when (at least among technical people - the use among non-technical
people probably predates me, or at least my memory) when it didn't.

I don't think it ever changed with artillery: I don't think I've ever
heard a single cannon/gun referred to as a battery.

I have an amusing piece of artwork: it shows a wall on which is written
"AA meeting", and before it single examples of several different brands
of that size of cell are standing ... (-:

Much modern low-cost electronics (I suppose and other things; I notice
it more for electronics) is in snap-shut cases (usually plastic), which
indeed cannot be opened once closed. If you're ultra-cynical you say
designed-in obsolescence; I'd say in some cases that's only a (though
arguably welcome from the manufacturer's point of view!) side-effect,
and is just to save the cost of fasteners (and the time and tooling to
apply them). (PSU bricks for example - though there they can claim a
safety intention too.)

My Energizer AA20 package brags that they are "The worlds #1 longest
lasting AA battery". And my Duracell AA20 package warns not to insert
the "batteries" backwards and to replace all used "batteries" at the
same time. So it appears the cell companies are OK with the new
battery definition......

Yes, that's true, Even I say CMOS battery when I know it is technically
a cell

But if you really want the real stuff, A diesel Electric submarine of
World war II vintage had 2 batteries, each battery consisted of 126
cells in series, each cell was 16 inches wide x 21 inches deep and 54
inches high, and weighed 1650 lbs. the 2 batteries weighed about 210
tons total.
Each battery had an output of approx 250 to 325 volts and when both were
hooked up in parallel they could put out about 15,000 Amps DC. :-)

Interesting but ancient history. Words change. During WW2 people were
often gay when we won a battle. Don't think that word use would fly
these days...

So I take it you plug in your shaver and it gets 325V DC ?

I hope the outlets are well marked.

I'm not sure about the UK, but in the US, the word "battery" has almost
completely replaced "cell." You are technically correct, but what you
say is almost always completely useless. If I were to walk into a
hardware store and ask for a cell for my flashlight (torch), nobody
would know what I was talking about.

Likewise 'here' (NL/EU (rest of the world)) when we walk into a shop
and say we want a 'cell phone'. In NL, the sales person would probably
say "Those hardly exist anymore!", implicitly referring to a phone
booth (Dutch 'telefoon cel' (phone cell)).
