theoretically yes, in practice what are supposed to be "sticky" setting
do not stick reliably.
it's another of those things which can't be done via the menus, only via
the GUI icons ... set a folder as you want them all (view/sort
order/threading etc) then click the "column" ivon on the right of the
message list headers and "apply current view to..." "current folder and
its children" and pick the top level of your news server
unfortunately, as I said, it won't last for long :-(

I find that clicking on the date column header arrow instantly re-orders
from earliest to latest; and vice versa.
And it stays permanent for me.

I added the 'order received' column and used that rather than date, only in news. Not much better
but I found a reason once, can't verbally repeat what.

You're referring to newsgroup folders that you want to set a default sort order for?

Then set these prefs:
mailnews.default_news_sort_order to 2
mailnews.default_news_sort_type to 18

yep

Quite frankly, *nothing* related to sort-order stays permanent for me,
but what specific action causes it to change is unfathomable, I don't
know whether it's some old setting that baked into my prefs or data files?

[date column header arrow] --- i'm not seeing that.

i suppose it's just like that (counterpart) in Windows's File-Explorer (is that the name for it?)

Perhaps " Date " column ... would be the one that
orders things by date ... ya think ?

I got sick of TB a long time ago. It works, and a lot of people use it so
it's good to be familiar with it, but there are better newsreaders. Usenet
seems to be an after-thought for TB.

I'm currently partial to 40tude Dialog. I don't even run Windows, but it's
worth running it in Wine on Linux, and it runs well.

Claws Mail is decent, but not my favourite. There are very good console
clients, but I don't use them often enough to have a useful opinion.

The arrow doesn't appear until you click on the column.

And to save time, yes, the same is true for *all* the other columns.

Tweakability. TB and BB are teeming with it. And that's the problem
here. Too much!
Somehow I've managed to accidentally hit a combo that works, but just
what it is I've no idea.
And most discussions end unsuccessfully, because of all the other
settings that are tied up with producing the particular effect one
person gets.

Mine works, and I don't know why. Yours doesn't, and you don't know why.
You'd like to fix yours, but nobody can tell you how to do it.

I've lived with it for years, having to click on the "received" column
to re-sort a couple of times/day is part of my routine now.

That doesn't happen to me. Maybe when there is a big version change,
those that they warn about the profile change being not compatible.

On first creation of an account or a folder, I have to click on the
column to sort by it, and it stays put.

What doesn't hold for me is what columns to show, sometimes a column
disappears.

I don't remember if there is a setting when selecting a particular order
or what columns to show if there is a tick to "make this the default". :-?

Yes. On the column header, left click on the rightmost symbol. A menu
appears, and the two last items are to apply choices to other folders or
subfolder or account.

Another entry is "restore column order".

I've always updated versions, never stuck on an old version then had a
huge leap forward, never gone backwards

yes, not sure when that "apply current view" option appeared, but I've
tried it (I even recommended that the O/P try it above).

I could nuke my profile and resubscribe to all my groups, but I'd lose
all my starred messages ...

In Thunderbird, you can add an X-Face header to your messages, but you
won't be able to display X-Faces.

There was an extension called Mnenhy that added this functionality to
TB, but it has stopped working for a long time. It can still be used in
SeaMonkey though.

For those interested, here is the last known version of Mnenhy:

You'd think if TB was going to allow the option to add an x-face to
headers they'd at least have an option to display them!

Is there a NG (Group) or Web-gallery where we can see Fancy or Cute X-Face collections?

X-Face is not a special option, it's just a header field. Thus, any
newsreader managing custom header fields can add an X-Face to a message.

However, displaying the X-Faces requires a bit of programming to convert
the contents of the header field into an image, and this has not been
implemented in Thunderbird.

Correct. IMO X-Faces were a childish way of usenet nerds to use message
headers, which are not officially documented, just to display some crappy
pixel-images.
I've blocked these images since the late 90ies, there's no additional value
from them. Just a waist of space and bandwidth.
