is Usenet making a comeback? -- (3 Signs of growth)

3 Signs of growth:

There are indications of renewed interest in Usenet in recent years.

This is attributed to several factors, including:

(1) Disillusionment with mainstream social media: Users seeking
more privacy and less censorship might find Usenet appealing.

(2) Niche appeal: Usenet thrives in specific areas like file
sharing and technical discussions due to its decentralized nature and
large historical archive.

(3) Improved accessibility: Modern Usenet providers offer
user-friendly interfaces and easier access compared to the past.

Or people cross posting to 5 groups at once ups the count.
Just look at Thunderbird, os-win10 and os-win11.

And of course I'm dumb enough to reply to your post and 3 groups myself. Duh.

Welcome to the dysfunctional world of 'Hen Hanna'. S/he is well know in
<alt.usage.english> for his inane questions, his bizarre message
formatting, and manic style of posting.

Ignore him - even when he is not cross-posting. He will eventually go away.

BTW - in case you are wondering why he has come to TB for advice - after
years of non-participation - it is because until now he was posting via
Google Groups. When he found out that that access was being closed down
(for usenet purposes) he decided to install TB.

It is filled with bots and people that spam flood the groups. Until it is

And who defines Aliens, lunatics and Terrorists?

The last thing Usenet needs is to turn into some fully moderated forum. How
would you do that anyway? Moderation on Usenet is "Difficult by Design"

Usenet's USP is that it is the last bastion of free speech,*
decentralised, uncensorable, owned by nobody but served by many.

Moderation and free speech are mutually incompatible. Yes, there is
bad behaviour, that's the way the world is. Learn to use a killfile and
you'll be fine.

Oh! I'm taken aback. Have we met before, Frank, maybe somewhere else
under a different name? Have I perhaps unwittingly offended you?

As you've *plonked* me, I don't suppose you'll see this.

Usenet worked when sysadmins were gods and Usenet servers were mostly located in
deepest, darkest academia or other research facilities. It's two greatest

Ah. One of the problems with wrestling trolls is being mistaken for
one oneself -- lay down with dogs, get up with fleas sort of thing.
The old adage about wrestling pigs is particularly apposite, eh?

How do ~you~ get over that problem, Jörg?
