115.6.0 (64-bit)

Recently, when I start T-bird after a reboot, and start logging into
my accounts, the passwords are repeatedly rejected.

But I've just proved that in fact, the PW was intially accepted
as mail from the server was collected. If I stop after the initial
rejection, all is well.

SMTP logins don't suffer from this.

Huh?

Thunderbird logging might provide a clue.

I had that problem three weeks ago with outlook.com IMAP, but it only
lasted a few days.

Logging showed Thunderbird trying normal authentication which was
rejected twice, and then automatically re-trying with "old style auth"
which succeeded. The so-called "password" rejections were outlook.com
rejecting normal authentication (which only occurred for a few days).
Mail from the server was collected when the "old style auth" succeeded
with the same password.

Without logging, I cannot say whether or not your problem has the same
cause.

Where do I look for such logging?

See <https://wiki.mozilla.org/MailNews:Logging>

There are two logging methods, and they do _not_ log the same things:
1) "Thunderbird Logging", specified by setting a preference in
Thunderbird. Logging goes to the Thunderbird error console.
2) "Gecko Logging", specified by setting environment variables.
Logging goes to a file.

Check whether you are using POP or IMAP to fetch your email. If you
are using POP to fetch your email, the following will not apply.

For IMAP, I needed to use "Gecko Logging" to log Thunderbird trying
to log in to outlook.com. To do this I started Thunderbird from a
Windows batch script which set environment variables (see below).
WARNING: I found the log file was automatically cleared when I closed
Thunderbird, so I needed to copy the file before* closing Thunderbird.

@REM Launches Thunderbird with IMAP debugging to log file

set NSPR_LOG_FILE=%USERPROFILE%\Documents\Logs\thunderbird_imap.log
set MOZ_LOG_MODULES=IMAP:5,timestamp
set MOZ_LOG_FILE=%USERPROFILE%\Documents\Logs\thunderbird_imap.log
START "TB" "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe"
IF ERRORLEVEL 1 pause
exit
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The IMAP log file was very large. One must look for the relevant lines.
This is Mac so must look at that.
