Hi,
I noticed today that youtube adblock seems to be getting less effective.
The ad plays for a solid 5 seconds before the adblock kicks in..
Is anyone else having this issue?

I don't use that extension. Try uBlock Origin instead. I also use
AdBlocker Ultimate but I don't recall that it's specific to YouTube.

I am using Ublock and haven't seen this behaviour... yet.
Have you updated the filters on your adblock?

Here too. I never get the extra delays on Youtube I was getting with
Adblock.

It's been 6 months or so since YT decided to block users who are using
adblockers. I don't know if freetube is a good alternative?

It has been my experience that UBlock Origin combined with Youtube Anti
Adblock Bypasser does the trick.

No ads and no warnings about having an adblocker (as in, "oh no, you
can't do that!") from YouTube.

I have not yet visited YouTube today (Sunday). However, I visited that
site yesterday and even downloaded a old popular music file, audio only
because the display only showed an image of the album cover.

On 2 April, I visited YouTube and downloaded both audio and video of a
viola concerto.

Any site can detect if you are using an adblocker. They can see you are
not retrieving all of their content. Up to them if they want to let you
visit while blocking. If you just must visit an anti-blocking site, you
may have to tweak your adblocker as to what is allowed among all the
entries that it blocked until you get minimal functionalty at the site,
or add an exclusion for the site in your adblocker.

It's not about ads, it's about YT not playing at all when you're using
an adblocker.

W11, Fx 124.0.4, YT not playing at all with uBlock Origin 1.57.0 (an
NoScript disabled). It looks like it's starting, but then it freezes.

I've go a "clean" Fx and YT plays fine if I use that, even with the
Adblocker for YouTube add-on active.

I'm also using Pi-Hole, but that doesn't seem to affect Fx.

It's about ANYTHING that blocks downloading of resources a web page
expects to retrieve whether it be an adblocker, hosts file, a firewall,
or whatever you use to block network resources. Youtube has no clue you
are using an adblocker, or which one, but they can detect when you
retrieve their web page, but not some or all of its resources. A site
can detect what you retrieve from it, and can cooperate with
other-domain resources (e.g., CDNs, Content Delivery Network providers,
to get, say, script or CSS files) to detect if you retrieve those, or
not. It isn't about modifying what is rendered after retrieving all
resources, like using Grease Monkey to modify the delivered web page,
but your client not connecting to and retrieving all the resources to
which a web page links. They can even pipe those resources through
their own server despite they come from off-domain, or they can directly
link to the other resources, but the latter would require cooperation
between the site you visited and the resource sites to detect a block.

Network blocking can be detected. Not sure how a site would know you
employed cosmetic filtering (on content that did get retrieved) unless,
for example, they see your client would not connect to a resource at
their site, like an image file.

Even web browsers can block resources. Firefox has its own inbuilt
blacklist (from Disconnect.me). So, you may have to go into
about:preferences#privacy to change the ETP level, or click the shield
icon in the address bar to disable ETP for that site (i.e., add an
exclusion).

A lot of effect is due more not so much to the version of the adblocker,
but on how it is configured. You might be using uBO's default setup for
blacklist subscriptions (aka filter lists), but those could differ than
my choices. There are also other config settings that could differ
between uBO users, like whether cosmetic filtering is allowed or not,
disabling pre-fetch, blocking CSP reports, any custom "my filters" you
added, any rules you added to allow/disallow resources at a site (which
means you're using Expert mode in uBO), if Javascript is enabled or
disabled by default, and if you block all Javascript, or just 3rd-party
scripts by default, any sites added to the Trusted Sites list, and so
on.

Web browsers can also have their own inbuilt blacklists, too.

Interesting. In my case, YT videos play just fine (with no ads).
Now that I've said that, I suppose the behavior will change.

UBlock was pretty good at moving stuff around to update quickly. So far
mine works.

Pi-Hole doesn't affect stuff that comes from the same server as the
content. It redirects requests to specific addresses, and if those
addresses also contain the ads it doesn't block anything. It mostly is
good for blocking all kinds of other ads that request stuff from
different servers.
