It's been nice reading and writing here but I just got a free upgrade to
Windows 11 (though I do double boot) so I'm going to bugger off for a
while - as was suggested so many times in the past.

By the way who was that guy that used to tell people:
'bugger off' Windroid?

It was Dan C, but there cranks everywhere. Win 11, eh? Good luck with that.

That was Dan C.

I don't know whether he's still around, though; I killfiled him ages
ago, and I haven't seen anyone replying to any posts of his either —
not even in the Slackware group.

But then again, he may just be lurking, and without giving away too
much, I have a strong suspicion that he might be posting through a
couple of sock puppets.

Oddly enough I 'met' him the other day at #slackbuilds on liberachat
where he goes as Dan_C. I had a brief exchange with him about the old
days, he has not done Usenet for some time now.

Mind you every year my own individual.net subscription comes up I weigh
up whether the current state of Usenet justifies €10...

The current state of Usenet is certainly a valid question on its own,
but if it's the fee there's also free servers.

For instance I am reading your thread
at free news.eternal-september.org run by the ever
amiable Ray Banana. So I use Thunderbird though I
could use SeaMonkey but with less facility. But
in our eternal-september.test I see plenty of the
gui-less tools tested on a regular basis. So you
have your choice of FOSS software to use.

What is costs me is what my net connecting costs me
which is too much, imho, but a matter for other times.

And I doubt the service could be better.
I was willing to pay for the news.individual.net
which is a very fair fee the last I knew but
the vendor could not take my bank cc.

My ISP had provided a Usenet server (and I used aioe.org as backup).
Meanwhile my ISP discontinued the Usenet service without providing
any alternatives. So I switched to eternal-september.org in addition
to aioe.org to access Usenet. Despite the "current state of Usenet"
I hope this access will still be possible in the future; better than
using Google Groups anyway.

Well, for what it's worth, I'm using news.eternal-september.org, which
is completely free of charge, albeit that it does not support binaries,
if you're into that sort of thing — personally, I'm not.

It does require registration with a valid email address, though, but
you're not obligated to use said email address as the visible address in
your newsreader. It's only for the registration and activation of your
account.

E-S does on occasion have outages, but for most part it works very well.

As for my own presence on Usenet, well, I'm not sure why I'm still here
either. I've been a regular here for well over 20 years now, and maybe
that's why I'm holding on, even though people come and people go, and
the times have certainly changed.

Back when I first started participating in Usenet discussions regarding
GNU/Linux, pretty much everyone was an enthusiast, and most of the
experienced users come from a background in proprietary UNIX. One
didn't have to be proficient in using a command line, but nobody was
allergic to it either, and we would often recommend solutions that were
command-line-based to the newbies.

Nowadays however, people don't even seem able to navigate a few menus
anymore, and everyone appears to be in a Microsoft Windows mindset.
That, or they are US-political right-wing bigots — I count Dan C as one
of those, and that's only one of the many reasons why he's in my
killfile.

Anywho, I've also got my hands full with the Manjaro forum, where I am
a moderator, as well as — at this point in time still — also the forum's
leader in terms of the number of accepted solutions to reported
problems. (If it sounds like I'm bragging, I'm not — sooner or later
someone else is going to overtake me anyway — but I'm also not going to
lie and claim that I'm not a little bit proud of it either. :))

And then next to that, I've also got a whole other forum to tend to.
It's not a computer-related forum, but there I am the sole administrator
— albeit not the owner of the place, but the owner himself doesn't
have any time left anymore for running the place, which is why he hired
me — with two moderators to help me out.

But we're all volunteers and we all do that in our own free time. Just
as is the case for my presence on Usenet. And I'm not getting any
younger or healthier. As the matter of fact, right now I'm sitting
here with a fever and a headache due to trapped nerves both in my lower
back and in my neck. And the day has only just begun.

Maybe one day I'll throw in the towel on account of my presence on
Usenet. But not today, and not for a while still, barring a sudden and
unexpected termination of my mortal existence — hey, shit does happen,
and it hasn't even been a year ago that I lost my baby sister.

The only two things you can take for granted about life is that you're
going to die eventually, and that one way or another, bad shit will
happen to you. Everything else is a variable.

I'm still around, I just check in once in a while. There's virtually no
content left worth talking about, just troll garbage.

Even "lurking" is a stretch, I check on things quite rarely in here these
days. Just happened to today, as I was looking for an e-book.

Your "suspicion" is bullshit, as always. I post only from this name, and
have always done things that way. No sock puppets here. If you knew
anything about Usenet and how to check things like headers (and more),
you'd know that to be true.

Bugger off, feeb.

You /are/ posting here via Win Tb, so that would result in a windroid
label, but I think you can be a Win user /and/ a linux user. The
business of how one does that depends.

You said

> though I do double boot

.... but to me that isn't the best way to do it. It is too much trouble
to transition from one system to another.

Some say a better way is w/ VM, but that doesn't suit my own situation.

Right now, to my right is another system; it happens to be running WinXP
and has a digital v. of my daily newspaper onscreen. I just finished
some puzzles I was doing from that source.

Altho' I considered it 'rude' of Dan C to tell those participating in
linux groups under Win to bugger off, I agreed in a sense that getting
to know linux was best done by participating in ng/s in *linux* not win,
so I tho't the 'windroids' (based on the metric of posting user agent)
should get more involved w/ linux so they could post to linux groups
while they were in linux.

So personally my own preferred method is to use multiple machines, be
99% in linux using installed, live, and live w/ persistence linux
versions. My favorite live w/ persistence method is using mkusb
persistence, my favorite live multibooting is Ventoy, and my occasional
Win/s are W7, XP, and almost never a W10 which laptop would rather run a
live linux w/ persistence. My current fave linux is Mint Cinnamon, but
I also like KDE Neon and don't care much for any Gnome, but I continue
to boot various distro/s of that DE because I didn't use to dislike it.

Is it just my environment that for hours I could not access that
news-server, or is it a (temporary or permanent) server issue?

(Currently having switched to the aioe.org server as backup.)

The electrons in the server have gone on strike. (I'm getting
no NNTP connection response at all here. The web site page comes up,
but the status insert is missing.)

http://www.eternal-september.org/index.php?showpage=status

But the electrons will return.

To check the situation, try eternal-september.support
newsgroup for details.

People post via aioe.org, into that group, to get the
attention of the administrator, when he gets home from work.

He had some interesting things to say when he wasn't going off on
someone. I guess he let his anger start to control him when posting on
Usenet.

I'm still around, checking in occasionally. The place is even more of a
sewer than it used to be.

Oh, and I never let my "anger" (?) control me in any way.
