I want to add GE-Pro to the secondary internet battlegroup
(right panel below xeyes) and SimpleScreenRecorder to the
secondary studio battlegroup (bottom right). The icons are
already in place but I have some issues

On-click the (presumably flatpack) GE-Pro.deb file I
downloaded from google

google-earth-pro-stable_current_amd64.deb

is handed over to the Package Installer which then
throws a fit for unsatisfiable dependencies with
no details.

As far as SimpleScreenRecorder for ubuntu I can't
even find it.

I'm new to 'buntus, for example GE works best with
the nvidia driver for my card, how do I find out
if it's installed, or install it if it is not?

22.04 Ubuntu under Wayland will not work with SimpleScreenRecorder. You
have to force the screen back to X11 by either selection or modifying
the config file.

I used to have Google Earth, but it ended up breaking my system and
vowed never to install it again.

What happened?
Problems with dpkg/apt?

No idea, that's one of the reasons I ended up doing fresh installs on
all of my machines. It was one of the packages that was broken. There
is a chance I may try a reinstallation at some point, but not before I
just did a backup beforehand.

Broken packages are really easy to fix, no reinstallation needed.

Yes, I've come across that since my fresh installs. However, I think
the fresh installs were needed anyway. I've seen much improvement
watching video, especially live via the net, and my audio is no longer
acting strangely. Before the reinstallations, no matter how I set the
audio, it would default to headphones out instead of speakers upon
reboot. I never did find the solution to that. After the fresh
installs, it was no longer an issue.

22.04 by native installation isn't quite compatible with a couple of my
programs and had to switch back to X11 to get correct operation. I tried
Plasma KDE, but I started finding issues with it and uninstalled it
(with difficulty but it did seem to go ok in the end). My biggest
concern and task was getting displaycal (a program that does monitor
color calibration with a spyder) installed, but now that's working
flawlessly. So hopefully good now with 22.04.

Should be PulseAudio. Use pavucontrol to change the output device.

I don't know how to test if my UbuntuStudio-22.04 uses wayland (or why I would want wayland) but I managed to install and test SimpleScreenRecorder as well as what I hope are the correct drivers form my nVidia GT640 card. The google-earth-pro.deb package still fails to install with the same dependency message that gives absolutely no details.

About the only things that really mean anything to me by way of reasons to have a computer at all are music/guitar studio activities of which SimpleScreenRecorder is a part, and flying the GE simulator. Dropping these I might as well junk the whole box so fortunately it's 1 down & 1 to go.

That's the same file I tried with QApt Package Installer which failed, it
still fails. Once I pointed gdebi to the file it installed it in seconds.
So how come the QApt finds dependency problems while the official
(installed with the distro!) Muon Package Manager can't even find GE?

IDK. I only work here :-)

Distro buildmeisters are the key to quality.
Look at how Klaus got the early Knoppix knocked into shape.

A lot of it is my lack of familiarity with apt, this repo matrix, the so
called debian forks, not to mention ubuntu. The way I see it my problems
are typical for anyone who comes fresh to a distro... could be better :-)

It was Thunderbird 102.2.2

Thunderbird 91.11.0
../google-earth-pro-stable_7.3.4.8573-r0_amd64.deb
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx ./google-earth-pro-stable_7.3.4.8573-r0_amd64.deb
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
../google-earth-pro-stable_7.3.4.8573-r0_amd64.deb

Ubuntu users may not be very upset that Thunderbird is not updated.

If you think you're poorly done by, I'd start by running a Debian,
then when you're in a vanilla Ubuntu, notice how all the
wheels on the rig are "properly greased". Canonical really
does contribute to the comfort features. Even if their
commercial aspirations are a negative to usability.

When I'm in a Debian, I keep cutting myself on sharp edges.
Which is inevitable in a volunteer operation, where you
can barely keep upstream alive.

To give an example, on Ubuntu, I didn't have NVDEC and NVENC
in FFMPEG, for accelerated video processing. I built FFMPEG
from source, using the source repository in the Canonical tree.
I turned on the -dev packages, in the usual way. Now, normally,
when you're building FFMPEG, the NVidia part of the -dev
additions, is a bloody mess. You'd probably waste a day or two
figuring out what is wrong. The build process does not print
on the screen, what is wrong.

The last time I built FFMPEG, the Ubuntu tree had everything
properly aligned for that build. You could tell that someone
was shadowing me, had built FFMPEG at Canonical as I was, and
they *made sure* the libraries for the driver I was using,
everything lined up.

And that to me, is quality.

The thing is, they keep track of licensing. They're not allowed
to ship non-FOSS by philosophy. So a manager at Canonical says
"hey, you can't enable that NVidia feature in FFMPEG", but
"you can set it up some someone can build it for themselves".
And that is obviously what they did.

Not only did they align the packages properly, they also adhered
to the miserably complicated licensing classification system.
How many people do you know, with that kind of time on their hands ? :-)

There will always be something broken in the tree, as there are
never enough hours in the day. But when something gets attention,
they really fix it. Why, some day, they could even fix Snap.

Paul

When I decided that I would not expose myself to any monopoly I opted
for two different desktops: Plasma and XFCE. I might even reel Gnome in
some day. By way of inits I wanted a mix and definitely not everything
on systemd. That's how I ended up with Devuan as my stake in the Debian
tree. Didn't know at the time that Ubuntu was also Debian-based, but I
did know that a relative of mine who works for IBM swears by Ubuntu and
set THAT up for his mother on her tablet with the intent of creating a
fail-safe system for her (she's in her 90's). But as I said, MY
experience with it is next to none, installed it what seems like only
weeeks ago, maybe a couple of months.

--
Either you get on top of IT, or IT will get on top of you; on Mondays I
boot and update mostly Artix, on Tuesdays Devuan, on Wednesdays
Slackware, on Thursdays Leap, on Fridays Tumbleweed, on Saturdays
AvLinux and on Sundays Ubuntu-Studio.
