There are many websites and youtube channels on retrogaming but I have always
assumed that the subject is too specialised to appear on mainstream
television. But recently I came across
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GameCenter_CX .This has been going on since
2003 and there have even been DVD releases ! Wow. So I was wondering whether
you know of similar examples from any country. I don't. I remember coming
across a wikipedia article a while ago about a similar television programme
in France but it didn't do well. I haven't kept a link.

Don't get too hung up on how old the games have to be to be considered
"retro" but the wikipedia article gives you an idea.

It seems that for the Japanese programme all the games were on Japanese
systems (3DO is kind of an exception. By the way , I was surprised by the
limited appearance of MSX computers). Not surprising perhaps but it leaves a
lot of unexplored territory for Western computers.

Does it count if the programme itself is retro? ie if the programme was
recorded in 198x featuring the latest releases, which are now considered
retro? Or are to specifically looking for people playing games from an era
prior to the one they were in?

I wasn't thinking about those but there's no harm mentioning those too.

A retro game is one which runs on a retro computer but it doesn't have to
have been written decades ago. People still write new games for the Amstrad
CPC , ZX Spectrum , Atari 2600 , etc. I don't think that the Japanese
television programme mentions those but they meet my idea of retro.
