I still have a box of second-hand software/small hardware to donate to
the charity stall, as mentioned re the South West Show; would anybody be
able to take that up from London?

Can't help here, but I *might* be going to the London one later in the year (I
believe it's moved to North London. It rather depends on exactly where they are
and where you are. It's something like 30 year since I last drove into London

I'm in South London (and never the twain shall meet!)

I wasn't aware that the venue had moved, but apparently it's going to be
in Harrow, which is closer but ironically probably takes more time to
get to than the previous out-of-London venue from this quadrant of the
city....

Looking at later posts in this thread, it seems it is in Harrow, and that
looks a lot better than having to drive to it's previous location in North
london, the reason I don't go to the London show. I will consider it this
year.

It is still inside Khan's expanded ULEZ zone though. So while my 2009
petrol car which does 18mpg is OK, the wife's 2014 diesel which does
45mpg gets fleeced.

Although at least it is on this side of London, if on a trip to the east
such as the Excel centre, it's actually cheaper to take the Wife's car
and pay the charge, rather than the amount of fuel mine would waste
crawling around the M25.

Feltham's in North London? I suppose it's north of the river, at least!

Now, the new location is in North London, I'll grant you that... :-)

I believe my 2016 Skoda Octavia estate, which averages 48-50mpg, is
compliant but I haven't checked. From kenilworth, I will probably come
down the M40 and wouldn't need to touch the M25.

Ok, I've just looked at the map to refresh my memory and it is East
London. It's a long time since I went but what I remember was a trip down
the M1 and then a dreadful journey to the hotel, for what seemed miles,
through built-up areas with heavy traffic. When we arrived, the car park
seemed almost overflowing, although we arrived at around the time the show
opened. The following year I cadged a lift with someone else and I wasn't
impressed with his driving so haven't been since.

However, before I venture to the new venue, I will do a virtual drive
using streetview.

When we visit the South-west show, we use a Park-and-ride a little to the
east of Bristol which is about a 10min bus ride from the hotel. Wakefield,
of course, was sited brilliantly but I've not been since it moved up to
Bradford.

Hmm. Not good, not at all good :(

By car I have two practical routes, Dartford crossing and M25 North, or M25
South. Both are equally unpleasant (and about the same distance). North is
slightly quicker, but of course includes the Dart charge.

If I go at all, I think I'll go by train. Twice as long travelling but far less
stressful. So sorry, Harriet, I won't be able to help.

From the motorway? Luxury. I used to take the A244 round from Leatherhead,
and that was invariably fun.

The car park at St Giles was pretty awful. Even getting a space as an
exhibitor could be a challenge.

It's not really any different if you're coming by car, except perhaps being
a bit further or a bit closer depending on where you're starting from (it's
further for Kenilworth). The hotel is right on the terminus of the M606, and
on a Saturday that's not usually busy -- and there's no need to negotiate
the roundabout at junction 3 unless you're coming in on the ring road,
because the underpass deposits you on the light-controlled junction where
the hotel is.

See https://www.wakefieldshow.org.uk/travel for a map -- I even drove
through the junction on the way home from work one evening to check the
directions.

The hotel is inside the Bradford CAZ, but unless you're driving some kind of
truck or commercial vehicle, you're probably exempt -- it's worth checking,
though. There's a link from the show website.

PS. I've just realised that the train map might be incorrect this year, as
I'm not sure if there are any services on the "blue" line from Ilkley to
Shipley until June or July after someone's house and garden ended up more on
the line than the embankment. It's a fairly niche route in (in terms of the
wider UK show audience), though, and those using it will probably have local
knowledge of the problems and replacement bus services.

That's all right - I shall probably be able to do it myself, although
possibly not by bike-and-trailer (Harrow being about fifteen miles away
and notoriously hilly!)
I think Islington marks the current limit of my self-propelled
explorations North of the River....
