Latest versions
When I start Betterbird the layout is 'classic' i.e. message pane at
bottom
When I start Thunderbird it always starts in 'vertical' layout. I can of
course change it, but next time, the same happens.
Solution in Config Editor or .....?

I know I should probably always use Betterbird, but there you are.
There's something holdong me back.

Embrace the change, Jim! :-)

The "something" holding me back was basically inertia. What got me
past that was this feature table:
https://betterbird.eu/#featuretable

Last month I ran Betterbird for about a week and then made it my
default email program. A week later I unpinned Thunderbird from my
taskbar. And this week I plan to uninstall Thunderbird and the
profile it was using. (At the start, I had cloned that profile for
the use of Betterbird.)

Does that mean Butterbird won't be promoted on a.s.c.s.T'bird?

Thunderbird v115.6.0
 *  Thunderbird v115.6.0 normally starts in 'classic' layout here.
 *  When I change the layout at "View >> Layout >> ...", the change is
still there after restarting Thunderbird v115.6.0.

FYI the Config Editor preference is "mail.pane_config.dynamic".
Values are: 0 = 'classic' layout, 2 = 'vertical' layout.

The Thunderbird folks changed the default for new profiles to vertical
view with cards since 115.2.3 for new profiles only:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1849000
Betterbird didn't follow this.

Once you adjust the layout, that change will/should stick and be
restored after restart.

While that is what I get with Thunderbird, it is not what the OP told
us he gets with Thunderbird. 🤷

Here TB starts on all systems with the classic view. Are you using the
same profile for BB and TB?
