It's really a battle of a "smartphone model" versus what
Linux users expect. The idea is to turn all the desktops
into "AnderOids". With much squeaky noises and footdragging.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/snapd/+bug/1643706

When Linux takes over the desktop, now we know what it
will need to look like to do that. An "AnderOid Desktop".
"Confinement is for your own good", Prison Warden.

*******

As for your other choice, of mentioning Firefox...

This is the rent-seeking model, which will compete for mindshare
with the AnderOid model. Mozilla will become Disney+ and your
browser will cost a mere $2 per month.

https://www.ghacks.net/2022/01/11/mozilla-and-linux-mint-sign-a-partnership-agreement/

*******

And these are the things you get, when you become "the dominant desktop".
This is the product distortion necessary to make it happen. You
can see vultures circling in the sky now... You know there is
carrion on the ground.

IBM buys RedHat.
Canonical wants to do an IPO.
Microsoft ships bash shell [cats sleeping with dogs].
And so on.

OK, for you kids playing along at home, now is a good time
to add EXT4 support to your copy of Windows, so you can use
Windows as your "maintenance OS" and move your files to /home :-)
