Good day all,
This is just a bit of Info for anyone RISC OS who has not bumped into a
WebP file. (Yet).

"Someone", sent me some images, as they do, without a resize, and in a
format that RISC OS cannot read or display.

Not a problem for me as I work on both sides of the OS divide, and am well
aware of this file format.

It's "WebP" which is a Google raster graphics format they'd like us to use
to replace PNG and GIF file formats and maybe even Jpegs.

Many graphics apps on the PC side can load and convert this file format to
a file format usable on RISC OS.

IrfanView
PaintShop Pro
PhotoShop
Windows Paint.

Various Win side browser can also display WebP files.

Edge
Chrome
Firefox

Just for information Dave, the Iris web browser can handle webp images on
RISC OS.

There is also a filetype setup for it &A66

Useful addition to the info Chris.

Dave

But, I can't run Iris because I run on Virtual RISC OS. :-)

Thanks Chris.

On the FAST with R 5.29 I've put image/WebP &A66 among all the
other image listings on my MimeMap (Tim Hill's version in Boot.
Resources.Internet.Files.) Is that right?

Strangely, on the Virtual Acorn adjust 4.39, Locate found 4 instances of
MimeMap thus..

HostFS::HardDisc4.$.!Boot.Choices.Default.Internet.Files.MimeMap
22 Jul 2020 This is the TimHill one.

HostFS::HardDisc4.$.!Boot.Resources.!Flash.Docs.Mimemap
14 Oct 2007 one entry only
application/x-shockwave-flash Flash 188 .swf

I have no idea what this is for.

The next two are modules. R 5 doesn't seem to have them.

HostFS::HardDisc4.$.!Boot.Resources.!System.310.Modules.Network.MimeMap

HostFS::HardDisc4.$.!Boot.Resources.!System.Modules.Network.MimeMap

I'm puzzled. (Usual state of affairs.)

Regards,

That looks right.

Note: I found what filetype it was from a posting on the ROOL forum.

That will be the valid one here.

But do remember that Virtual Acorn has its own MimeMap from the windowed
Virtual Acorn - I think that is actually the master for VA.

Thats to do with the very old Flash Player! I doubt there is now any need
for it or for Flash program on VA.

Leave these alone they are modules not Mimemap type text files

Does it? I'd have expected something more like

image/webp WebP a66 .webp

where WebP in the middle is the RISC OS filetype name (as given in a ROOL
forum post). There's no & on the numerical filetype in this file, as the
value is always given in hexadecimal.

It's a document in the Docs folder of the Flash Player application,
documenting what you would add to your live MimeMap file if you wanted it to
recognise Flash files. Just because a file has the name MimeMap, doesn't
mean that it is actually being used as by the MimeMap module -- or even that
it is a mappings file.

What matters is where the Inet$MimeMappings variable is pointing: that's the
*only* file that MimeMap will be using. On the RO5 machine here, it's set to
InetDBase:MimeMap; consequently, looking up InedDBase$Path tells me where
the file is located.

Ahh! This could be a problem as I was going to suggest the excellent
!CLFiler program by Cloverleaf. It has a built-in image viewer which
reads quite a few non-RISC OS image file formats like webp. It works
in conjunction with !ImageMagick running under RISC OS 5.29 which makes
me think its unlikely that !CLFiler or !ImageMagick will run under
Virtual RISC OS. Can anyone clarify?

Thanks for the info Steve et al.

How does one go about checking this variable.? Is it a search involving
the Task Window?

Ahem. That should be InetDBase$Path, of course...

(Ctrl-)F12 and then

Show Inet*

should probably cover both variables (and a few others, too). Or you could
type them out in full, as

Show Inet$MimeMappings
Show InetDBase$Path
