I have been through all the menus I can think of but obviously have not
yet found the one I need.

I am using an OLED 4K monitor for display.
Works fine except that the text is too thin and hard to read for my aged
eyes.

Step by step, how do I change the font to a medium bold font ?
What font is recommended ?

I already fiddled with DPI but I do not want to use that because it does
not help as I need.

Thank you.

Have you toyed with these settings? Starting about step 7, about 1/3 of
the way down the page; detailed pictures.

There are Bold and Italics ("B" and "I") items on the
right of this picture from that page.

https://www.sevenforums.com/attachments/tutorials/182d1486561488t-window-color-appearance-change-classic_color_and_appearance-2.jpg

The Bold button should make the text appear slightly
thicker. Part of the problem might be ClearText treatment,
but we'll see.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ClearType

Different versions of Windows, have different means of doing
subpixel rendering. ClearType uses colored pixels along the
edge, to smooth the edge of the text. A portion of the population
(1% to 2%), their visual system is upset by such feathering.
ClearType was probably introduced in Windows XP. That's when
I remember first seeing it. I don't think Win2K had it.

ClearType usually has a "tuner" page, where you can select
the orientation of the subpixel rendering, to take into account
the pixel layout of the display. It's quite possible an OLED
device has a different pixel layout than an LCD monitor or
an old CRT monitor. Each monitor type may require adjustment.

Later OSes might not have the same fixation with ClearType,
and I think I've seen text decorated with different methods,
on the screen at the same time. There does seem to be
an option to switch it on here.

https://www.laptopmag.com/articles/adjust-cleartype-windows-10

Summary: Those are the options. Play with the text font declaration.
Play with the ClearType orientation and tuning.
Adjust the "Scale" setting to achieve a usable
screen in a HiDPI mode. Even some programs may have
config settings (about:config in Firefox) for HiDPI.
Well written code probes the system to extract the
fact the screen is HiDPI, and is at least 2x the
required pixel density.

I fiddled with cleartype and I cannot see any difference in any of the
provided text examples to select from.
They all look the same to me.
Maybe because my monitor is OLED ????

Seems a strange name for a place to set fonts.
Anyway I will try to find it and see what it can do to help.

Once you get text to a decent size, try it again
with the ClearType tuner. Maybe the dots on your
screen, really are too small for it to make
a difference.

There is a pattern to the OLED. There's one picture
here with an example. I doubt any other display type
works like that.

Here's a non-computer fix for you. Can't claim credit as I saw my boss
doing it: I saw her wearing reading glasses over the top of her
regular glasses. So I tried it at home - Foster Grant drugstore
glasses 1.50 strength over the top of my regular specs make all the
difference for me.

Interesting.

I have been using the Windows screen magnifier and that also works but
is not a good solution.

You might want to change the monitor resolution, that's what I did on my

small. I found I could change it to 1600*900 (same aspect ratio) which
is easier to read.
