This is a small thing, reall just a curiosity, not a problem, but I
offer it for comments:

In the past couple days I've noticed that if I open a new blank tab in
FF, and I'm using the google search pge as my new-tab page, and I to to
put search terms in the google search box, even though I have clicked in
the search box first, when I paste the terms in, they appear in the
search box at the top of the screen, not within the page!!

For example, I was searching for
ask-amy-blended-family-is-not-really-blended/
and when that's in the box at the top of the page, instead of looking
for it in the google index, it thinks it's a url and says it can't find
it. Whereas, if it were in the google search box, it would know it's
not a url and it would look in the google index. I know this is true
because an easy work-around is to put the same phrase in the right-hand
search box and click on the arrow to the right, which for me is Google,
and then it finds it.

Is this new? I rarely use the google search box and normally just use
the url box, even when I want google, and afaicr, it's always worked
fine. Maybe it's because there are no spaces in my search term, only
hyphens. But even if that be the reason, I wanted to call it to your
collective attention.
