Ahh, no sight of this post either. I guess Bad Sector's posts are
now getting blocked by the news server I use for some reason.

No, but if you don't believe me that /etc/hosts is re-read
automatically on Linux after it is edited (without a reboot),
here's an example (run as root):

# wget --spider www.google.com
--08:43:37-- http://www.google.com/
=> `index.html'
Resolving www.google.com... 142.250.70.228
Connecting to www.google.com[142.250.70.228]:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK
Length: unspecified [text/html]
200 OK

^ Programs can talk to Google.

# echo '127.0.0.1 www.google.com' >> /etc/hosts

^ Add entry to etc/hosts

# wget --spider www.google.com
--08:43:48-- http://www.google.com/
=> `index.html'
Resolving www.google.com... 127.0.0.1
Connecting to www.google.com[127.0.0.1]:80... failed: Connection refused.

^ www.google.com can't be reached anymore

As I say, it might require restarting _Firefox_ in order for
changes to take affect there, and also if you have DNS-over-HTTPS
enabled then it won't affect Firefox at all. But for less-crazy
software on Linux it just works.
