I'm running Win 7 PRO SP1 64-bit and I'm using Open Office V4.1.5. A
while ago when things Java were being deprecated, I deleted the various
Java pieces that I had on my machine. I've now noticed that Open Office
needs some sort of Java support to implement some of its features.

Therefore, I would like to reload the necessary Java components
necessary to restore Open Office capabilities. I'm not sure if I need
the runtime, script, or something else. I would appreciate a pointer to
were I might find the necessary software.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Download JRE from here.

https://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

If you're presented with an error page, clear the cookie for `www.java.com`
site then reload the page.

Download the matching bitness as the one for your Open Office. e.g. download
the non 64-bit one (i.e. the 32-bit one), if the Open Office is 32-bit. The
bitness must match, otherwise Java won't be usable from Open Office.

Thanks for responding. I wasn't sure about 32 vs 64 bit Open Office and
there Help About didn't say so I downloaded both versions and installed.
Some of the things that I tried now work.

Java and Apache OpenOffice

<https://www.openoffice.org/download/common/java.html>

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ QUOTE ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Which Java Version Do I Need to Use Apache OpenOffice?
You will need to have a JRE version (32-bit or 64-bit) that is compatible
with the architecture of the Apache OpenOffice version you downloaded.
[...]
Important note for Windows users:
The Windows version of OpenOffice is 32-bit and therefore it requires a
32-bit JRE. Even when you have a Windows version with 64-bit installed.
Furthermore you have to install a 32-bit JRE - additionally or instead -
when you already have a 64-bit JRE installed.
Where Can I Get Java?
The current versions of Apache OpenOffice work reliably with a variety of
JREs including Oracle Java, versions 6, 7 and 8 [link], openJDK, versions
6, 7 and 8 [link] and AdoptOpenJDK, versions 8 and 11 [link]. Feel free
to download a JRE from either of these sites if you feel you need this
functionality.
Do you use Base, the database module (not the Calc spreadsheet module)?
If you don't use Base, you don't need Java. If you make use of
accessibility or assistive technologies, you may need Java.
LibreOffice also has some Java dependency, but on some esoteric
features. I don't have JRE (or the SDK) installed. I haven't hit a
need to install the JRE to get something to work in LibreOffice;
however, I am not a power user of LibreOffice. The following shows when
Java is needed:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Faq/General/015
If Java is required, a prompt appears (error message), and I haven't
seen one in using LibreOffice for a couple years. Are you actually
getting such a prompt?
I was running into some problems when I turned on hyphenation and other
gizmos that support text better than notepad. I'm not doing anything
with Base or fancy spread sheets. Most of my usage is for reading
incoming documents prepared with M$ tools. I only rarely use Open Office
to generate anything but that's when I find a few minor problems.
Thanks for responding.
For non developers, I wouldn't recommend getting JRE from a JDK package,
because at least half of the installed files would never be used. They'll
just waste disk space even though there's still Tera Bytes of free disk
space left.
