Ultimately, K-9 Mail will transform into Thunderbird on Android.
That means the name itself will change and adopt Thunderbird
branding. Before that happens, we need to reach certain development
milestones that will bring K-9 Mail into alignment with Thunderbird’s
feature set and visual appearance.
To accomplish that, we’ll devote finances and development time to
continually improving K-9 Mail. We’ll be adding brand new features
and introducing quality-of-life enhancements.

If you want to help shape the future of Thunderbird on Android,
you’re encouraged to install K-9 Mail right now. Leading up to the
first official release of Thunderbird for Android, the user interface
will probably change a few times. If you dislike somewhat frequent
changes in apps you use daily, you might want to hold off.

OAuth2 authentication has since been added to K-9 -- new functionality
wanted by many K-9 users.

The roadmap includes
* Support for message filters;
* Improved account setup using Thunderbird account auto-configuration.

These are all Thunderbird *functional* features which many K-9 users
want and which K-9 is expected to get.

K-9. The project was taken over by TB. But the software still differs

Some clarity:
* No plans to put a "Supernova" UI on to K-9 - a phone is a completely
different device with different UI needs. And there is nothing in the
road map to do what you are sugggesting.
* It's true K-9 is well established. It's also true the lead K-9
developer was very much interested to partner and is still leading
developement.
* The lead developer presented a session at the most recent fosdem
https://fosdem.org/2024/. The near term road map is at 9:40 of
https://fosdem.org/2024/schedule/event/fosdem-2024-2497--clients-introduction-to-thunderbird-for-android/
* As judged by the many fosdem attendees who visited the Thunderbird
booth, K-9 and android users interested in a client with Thunderbird
synergy were overwhelmingly positive about the available demo and future
potential. (which also mirrors the comments at
https://blog.thunderbird.net/2022/06/revealed-thunderbird-on-android-plans-k9/
) * There is of course a lot of work to be done, and trust to be
developed. Here are the links to be involved and informed:

So I'm curious about the T-Bird+K9 will look like.

I use K9 and while much is good, there are things I really hate.

First, it's locked into Microsoft mode with the quoted text
AFTER my response. Even worse, I can not seem to mark the
unwanted text and cut it. All I can do is backspace through the
entire quote except what I want to retain.

Second, I lust for a way to poll for new mail NOW but I've yet
to find a way to kick such off.

If you are using IMAP go into the settings for each account, go to
Fetching Mail, and turn on Push Folders.

Raise a Feature Request for bottom-quoting option:
<https://github.com/thunderbird/thunderbird-android/issues/new/choose>
Post the number here. It could be useful for mailing lists -
perhaps it could be specifiable by recipient - like
html/plaintext once was in TB.
Don't hold your breath, though.

On plain text messages I can edit the quote, select text and
delete it with a single backspace key.

It possible, with plain text, to copy the entire quote, delete it,
and paste it above your reply. I guess I'd do in a technical
mailing list.

You can swipe down in the inbox.

I meant bottom-posting, of course.

Me too, I use both, but wonder if the sum will be better than the parts?

click the pencil icon, then the normal android select/cut/copy/paste
kicks in
