r3dfox (r3dactedfox)

r3dfox is a fork of the open source web browser Mozilla Firefox made
specifically for Windows 7 and 8 compatibility. There may be other tweaks,
however the goal is to remain as close to stock Firefox as possible.

Limited compatibility with the Windows XP and Vista extended kernels is
offered at the current time, however they may not be tested consistently.
Any issues that may arise that are hard to diagnose may be left to the
extended kernel provider to fix.

https://github.com/Eclipse-Community/r3dfox

....

Another good news. It finally came. Similar to Supermium, but for Firefox
instead of Chromium.

Though, the current v125.0.2-2 release still has a minor but annoying bug,
where its process got stuck and fail to terminate when the application is
closed.

Other annoyance is its built-in half baked dark theme, where the main menu
(when shown) uses black text. i.e. black text on dark background. Typical
for theme creators who consider dark theme as cosmetics rather than
accessibility. But it can be easily worked around by using other well and
properly made theme.

Regardless, it's still very usable.

I was under the impression that Firefox was compatible with Win7. I use
the latest version of FF ESR v52.9.0. In what way is r3dfox an
improvement on ESR?

The latest Firefox release is version 125.0.2 (22 April 2024) which
does _not_ support Win7.
<https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/125.0.2/system-requirements/>

The last version of Firefox to support Win7 was version 115.x.

The latest version of FF ESR is version 115.10.0 (16 April 2024).

The last update to the ESR 115.x series will be in September 2024.
After that time future FF ESR releases will _not_ support Win7.

I am not a spokesman for r3dfox.
But I would presume that r3dfox updates will continue to support
Win7 after September 2024.

It's part of Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2022 Redistributable package. Below
is for the 3rd revision of the package (2018 release).

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=52685

The details page for it is originally at:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=52685

But for questionable reason, Microsoft decided to remove that details page
including for others - even though the file downloads are still there.

So, if a details page no longer exist, simply change the "details" to
"confirmation" in the URL to get the file download. Not all, but most of the
time, the file downloads are still there.

If the details page is the one which is actually needed, use Internet
Archive's Wayback Machine to access the archived page.
