Sorry I am so dense.

I went into Windows Media Player only to find it was not every set up.
So I did that and then went through and disabled everything I could
think of and find and Apply all changes.

But the hog wmpnetwk.exe is still eating 3G of my RAM and greatly
perturbating my other apps. The go slow and some crash while that thing
is running.

I used Sysinternals Process Explorer and killed that file and it still
come back.

Gentle guidance please. Simple steps please.

Microsoft discontinued support of Windows Media Player more than a year
ago. I suggest you do a search on "wmpnetwk" (without the ".exe"). If
you find "wmpnetwk.exe.mui", change the name to "x-wmpnetwk.exe.mui-x".
Then rename "wmpnetwk.exe" to "x-wmpnetwk.exe-x". Wait a month or two.
If there are no adverse impacts, then remove those files.

For audio and video streaming and playing files resident on your
computer, try VLC from <http://www.videolan.org/>. Actually, I use
<http://download.videolan.org/vlc/> to get updates.

Well, it's a rather curious situation.

Windows Media Player, has an ON switch for streaming support
(which causes that service to run), but there is no OFF switch.

Which I think is just so kooky, I'm lost for words.

This is your solution first.

Start : Run : services.msc

Set "Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service"
to Disabled, click OK, reboot and verify it is
no longer in Task Manager.

*******

The rest of this posting, is for your amusement.

Let's say that didn't fix it.

The Program Files, the part that holds Windows Media Player,
has the EXE of that service in it. Changing the name of
the file, by adding .BAK to the end of the file, would
prevent Services.msc from loading it. But you will find
that the file ownership properties are quite resistant
to such modifications (to keep malware out), when all that
the permissions do, is keep users out :-) You could modify
the file from a Linux session, as an example of "easily beating"
such problems.

There are some more pictures of the giblets, here.

Hi,

I've been running Windows Media Player (WMP) version 12.0.7601.24499 on a
Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 for many years. When my WMP is running, I see
'WMPNetworkSvc' in the Services tab of Task Manager. My machine is not
bogged down, but just for fun, I decided to Stop it from running by left
clicking the service, and selecting Stop service. Then, in the lower right
of the Task Manager window, click on the Services button, which will take
you to a Services window. You'll probably land in the Extended tab (lower
left). Find 'Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service' and left click
and select Properties. In the General tab, go to the Startup type field
and change to Disabled. Click Apply, OK...

When I do all of the above, and re-launch WMP, the service does not start
up again by itself, but my WMP still runs just fine.

However, I see no difference in memory use whether the service is enabled
and running, or not. I have no idea why you are bogged down.

If his queue has some transcoding tasks to do,
his loading could be different than yours.

To leak memory like his is doing, suggests
the queue is in a loop somehow (like a transcode
happens, the output goes into the queue folder
by accident, it is transcoded again, rinse and
repeat repeat repeat).

Using Procmon and watching writefile events, might
give some hint what is going on. I don't want to
simulate that, because I'd never get C: straightened out
again afterwards :-)

Turning off that service, is the only logical thing
I could find for this. If I reached into the registry,
it would probably just end up using entries related
to that service, so hardly worth the trouble when
services.msc gives a nice GUI to select "Disabled".

Thanks all.
I think I have got it now.
Windows Media player was never used thus never setup so why would I
think it was doing anything.
Seems that it just automatically started upon first turn on of the
laptop to do streaming attempts, 2.5G of memory eating.

I went into WMP and turned all off it that did not stop t.
I did msconfig and found the services for wmp and it was enabled.
Turned that off and now I am solved.

Thanks again for your responses and insights.
Never could have solved this without your help.

Just an additional information...

If WMP is never used and never will be, it can be removed by turning WMP off
from the Windows Features dialog. e.g. turn off WMP and Media Center, but
keep the DVD Maker.

Although Windows will still keep a copy of the application files in case WMP
will be turned on again, the related application files in `C:\Program Files`
including its service executable file in Windows' `system32` folders will be
deleted, and the WMP's service will be unregistered from the system. Thus,
freeing a little disk space.
