I'm staying with TB 102 at present, but thought it might be of interest
to look at BB 115 in relation to layout changes, etc, introduced in TB
115. I know BB 115 can use TB 115 profiles, but can it use TB 102
profiles *without* changing them to 115 profiles?

The first line of
<https://www.betterbird.eu/support/index.html#switch-tb-bb> states
"Betterbird is designed to be 100% compatible with Thunderbird of the
same version". That sort of implies BB 115 can't use TB 102 profiles,
but doesn't specifically state it. If it can't use them, could I install
BB 115 and let it create a 115 profile from TB's 102 profile, but in a
different folder, so the TB 102 profile remains unaffected in its TB folder?

Use *copies* of the 102-profiles. My recommendation is to use the
Profilemanager and place the FF- and TB-profiles in your personal
data-folder.

BB can use them exactly like TB.

TB 115 *cannot* use the profile of TB 102 (I've tried). Why would you
expect BB 115 to be able to do so, especially if it is compatible with
TB 115?

Short answer: yes. It's been my experience that I can use my saved
profile from v102 for v115.

I think that'll do, sure. In the command line, add -p to it, so when it
opens, it will allow you to choose which desired profile to use.

However, the userChrome.css I used for v102 does NOT work for v115 which
required cobbling together a desired result from various sources, tips
and suggestions as well as using Developer Tool built into Betterbird to
find suggested script changes.

I didn't "expect" it to do so, which is why I asked the question. TB 115
converts a 102 profile to a 115 profile. I wondered if BB 115 could to
the same with a TB 102 profile. From what you've said it can't, but Jörg
Lorenz suggests it can. Of course, the problem may be inconsistency.
From the BB support page on switching:

"Warning: We have had many support cases where things don't work in
mysterious ways after using the import function to import a Thunderbird
profile. This functionality comes directly from our Thunderbird base and
appears to be deficient. So please use with care. It's better to
manually copy a Thunderbird profile in the OS if you require a copy in
the first place instead of running Betterbird on an existing Thunderbird
profile. We're unable to support users who have used the import function."

Sure it can. Tried with BB and TB at least a dozen times.

No there are some minor limitations which are not relevant. 99% of the
users upgraded from 102 to 115 with their existing profiles.

But: You cannot simply turn back if you do not like it.

In the future use the profile manager:

Windows: "thunderbird -profilemanager" in the shell
Linux: Same in the Terminal Application
