I was running Kubutnu 21.10 and the computer worked fine. I did a
clean install of the new Kubuntu 22.4 and ran into a couple of
problems.

The first big problem I encountered was trying to install my HP
printer using hplip-3.22.2.run. I ran this in the Konsole but the
install terminated because the program could not find internet access
in the Konsole. I tested this and was able to ping in the Konsole so I
did have internet access, but the program could not find it. So, no
printer was installed.

The second problem I encountered was using the eBook program, Calibre.
The program was unable to open an epub because the machine was missing
a QT file.

The third major problem for me was using WPS Office. The program, a
..deb file downloaded from the WPS Office site, installed with no
errors. Icons were properly placed in the launcher. But the program
would never load. Even launching System Monitor showed the program was
not running.

Those three were big problems for me so I downgradede to an earlier
version and everything worked properly once again.

This O/S needs updates and work before I can use it.

YMMV

I plan to write several 22.04 'ub/s to Ventoy to boot live; Ub, Kub, Ub
Mate, Lub, & Ub XFCE to see what I think. I'm not a fan of Gnome, my
preferred KDE 'ub is KDE Neon.

Check if internet access works for IPv4 and IPv6 and check if name
resolution via DNS is working.

What file?
Use apt-file <filename> to find the package that provides that file. If
you use the package from the official package sources you should file
a bug because the dependencies in apt should enforce that such
library packages are being installed when installing a package.

The run it in a terminal and check the error messages.

Hi Marco,

Yes, indeed. There are absolutely ways to fixt it. It's only a
computer. And with the right tools, it can do just about anything.

The point I was attempting to express is that ealier releases
basically just worked. The new Kubuntu doesn't "just work". In time,
with updates, I'm sure it will.

But as a user, the new Kubuntu failed me in at least those three ways.
And the older version didn't. I downgraded to the older version and
now have no problems while making no changes. And my hardware is old
enough that I don't need an update.

I will certainly try 22.4.x, but not until I need to do so. I'll keep
my current version. I just wanted to give my feedback on the new
release in case anyone was looking for coments about how it works for
me.

Another issue... the snap of firefox includes every f***ing language
known to mankind, while I had only en-US in 20.04. Is there a way to
go back to the deb version of FF?

FF isn't included as a DEB package in Ubuntu's repository for
22.04 anymore.
You need a 3rd party repository.
There is one available:
https://launchpad.net/~mozillateam/+archive/ubuntu/ppa
There is also Ubuntuzilla:
https://sourceforge.net/p/ubuntuzilla/wiki/Main_Page/

Looking forward to nosnapbuntu when somebody forks Cancomical.

Snaps will be the death of Ubuntu, it's done so well in the last few
years. Now all wasted. These bloody snaps make me SNAP!

Fully agree. Snap as an additional feature would be good, but Canonical
like to go to snap-only. Many people already complain about that.

Existed long before Ubuntu. They call it Debian.

People have been saying that for ever. First, the amazon store thing,
then Unity, then the other thing, now snaps. Meh. remove them or use
something else. Ubuntu will be around longer than you or I.

After upgrading to Ubuntu 20.04, (IIRC June 2022) I found snap files interfered with thw way I did backups, and decided
to clear away the whole snap/snapd subsystem.
I found usefule instructions on:
https://cialu.net/how-to-disable-and-remove-completely-snaps-in-ubuntu-linux/
and have been running Ub. 20.04 since with no untoward effects.

When I wanted to install chromium without using snap I found:
https://www.inx.one/blog/debian-repo-on-ubuntu
(Though I beleive that repository in no longer being updated)
more information (which I have not followed up, yet)
https://sites.google.com/site/installationubuntu/home/ubuntu-20-04/chromium-browser-without-snap

Similarly, googling for "Ubuntu 22.04 Firefox without snap" I found:
https://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2022/04/install-firefox-deb-ubuntu-22-04/
.... And I'm sure there are (or will be) more

*After* removing snap, snapd and friends, create a file
/etc/apt/preferences.d/nosnap.pref
with contents:
<code> <--- Don't copy thes line
# To prevent repository packages from triggering the installation of Snap,
# this file forbids snapd from being installed by APT.
# For more information: https://winaero.com/enable-or-disable-snap-in-linux-mint-20/

Package: snapd
Pin: release a=*
Pin-Priority: -10
# To prevent repository packages from triggering the installation of Snap,
# </code> <--- Don't copy this line
....or google "nosnap.pref"

I put 5 22.04 'ub/s on a Ventoy; UbG, Kub, Lub, UbMate, & XUb; then did
a quick survey of those desktops, for example comparing ram used live to
the desktop. Some may be surprised to hear that Xub & Kub were the same
(500meg), less than Mate, but more than Lub by 20%.

In a brief perusal, I liked Kub best. I will make a non-Ventoy live USB
22.04 Kub w/ persistence w/ mkusb to replace a persistent live KDE Neon
which is rigged w/ Kleopatra for dl/ing, hashcheck, authenticate, and
write to Ventoy multiboot.

Kub's KDE is current at 5.24.4. I'll get rid of the ubsnapcrap and
replace the Snap Ffx w/ a .ppa'd .deb. one.
