I have a few external drives. I had a USB stick in one of the front
USB ports on my comp. It was set to the drive name of J:. I had a
bit of a problem when taking out the USB stick from the USB jack.
My comp burped somehow and my external G: drive became G: (J:). All
my shortcuts to files on what used to be the G: drive now have to be
changed to J:. I looked in Device Manager but couldn't figure out
how anything in there would help me.

Anyone ever hear of the nonsense happening? Anyone have a clue how
to get my drive renamed back to G: from J:?

That normally happen when a USB drive is plugged into a different USB port.
Or the drive letter is already used by other drive when the USB drive is
plugged in.

To change the drive letter of a drive volume, open the Disk Management.
Right click on the drive's volume. Choose "Change Drive Letter and
Paths...". Click the "Change" button. Choose the new drive letter. Click the
OK button. Choose Yes if prompted.

Make sure there's no file is being opened, or no program is being run in the
USB drive (or any drive whose drive letter is about to be changed).
Otherwise, data loss may occur.
