Win 7 Pro
8G RAM

Ram is being eaten up by some app.
I do not know what the app is.
I do not know how to kill it.
I tried in Process Explorer to kill it.
It goes away then it comes back.
It is using 2.5Gigabytes of RAM.

It is
wmpnetwk.exe

Also
MsMpEng.exe is eating 243M RAM

How do I stop these apps ?

Three Explorers are open but one eats 119MBytes, but the others only eat
47M. Why ? Can this be be limited ?

Thank you.

It appears that wmpnetwk.exe is part of Windows Media Player, which
Microsoft discontinued a few years ago. The file is at
[C:\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-wmpnss-service_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.17514_none_61acd141e5332baf\wmpnetwk.exe].
When I am not sure if something can be deleted, I change the name of
the file by bracketing with x- and -x. In this case it would be
x-wmpnetwk.exe-x. I set a reminder in my calendar for 2-3 months in the
future to remove it if nothing adverse is seen in the meantime. Since
you see the file reappearing, you should do the same with
wmpnetwk.exe.mui at
[C:\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-w..s-service.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_en-us_676207815c08e334\wmpnetwk.exe.mui],
which I think is an installer for wmpnetwk.exe. (Yes, I do see .. in
the path.)

On the other hand, MsMpEng.exe appears to be part of Windows
anti-mailware system. I would be reluctant to remove it unless you have
total faith in whatever non-Microsoft anti-malware application you have
running. If you do decide to remove it, I would follow the same process
I describe for wmpnetwk.exe, with a full 4 months delay instead of 2-3
months.

Windows Media Player supports media streaming.
Open the Preferences and see if such a function is enabled.

https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/139310-media-streaming-using-windows-media-player-turn-off.html

Other than that, once you've disabled that, I would not
expect anything else named wmp to be running.

*******

It's about time you learned about discretionary
memory consumption.

Memory (Private working set) in Task Manager.

A copy of testlimit64.exe

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/testlimit

Now, with a Command Prompt open

cd /d C:\users\username\Downloads

testlimit64.exe -d 7168 -c 1 # use 7168MB of memory, allocated 1MB at a time
# salt to taste. 64 bit version can use all ram.

Press control-c to exit...

What should happen, is the "fat" should be squeezed
out of the other process working sets. They will be
down to their "minimum" usage at that point in time.

Once you kill testlimit64, the processes will "reinflate"
slightly. The web browser may need to open a few web pages
before it becomes it enters its previously porky state.

This is meant to simulate what happens when a
needful program starts. If you were running Photoshop64.
then the other processes would "squeeze down a bit"
to make room.

Did you look at the start up files in MSCONFIG? You may be starting
Media Player without knowing it. I don't use it much and only on
demand so I am not sure what resident functions it has. I am RAM poor
so I am real careful about what I let Windows start up without me
asking for it.

It looks like I got the parameters in the wrong order
for the testlimit thing.

testlimit64.exe -d 1 -c 7168 # leak 1MB at a time, 7168 times

I noticed during testing, that it was biting into the pagefile,
which meant I wasn't doing it right.
